Work Text:
Rain barely opened her eyes before she heard the energetic sound of her brother’s voice.
“Did you h-hear about the m-miner who got...hit in the head with a soda can?”
Andy stood by her bed and smiled down at her, in that cute squinty way of his. Looking as if he'd been waiting to say that one all night.
“Good thing it was a soft drink.” She answered before he could, knowing the joke by heart.
He took a step back and watched his sister stretch and shift to sit upright on the edge of her bed.
“Wh-What about the miner whose...cat got an award at school?” He asked, leaving little space between the first one.
“Yes, for purrrfect attendance.” She smirked playfully.
Andy's grin brightened. It couldn’t reach the corners quite right, but Rain could see it shine in his eyes.
“Did you...sleep well?” He asked, the same way he always did.
“Mm, pretty good.”
Rain reached for her watch and saw she had two missed calls, with one incoming. She didn't bother checking to see who it was; she clicked the side button and set the device back down on her dresser, letting out a deep sigh.
“I had the dream again.”
Andy tilted his head.
“The one about...Yvaga?”
Her smile slowly returned. “Mhm.”
“Were you...on the hill again?”
“No, this time I was on a mountain. On the edge of a cliff.”
Andy lifted his eyebrows with a simper.
Rain scooted off the bed and patted him on the shoulder before heading to the bathroom. Her brother followed right behind her, but stopped when she gently closed the door.
“I-I have a story to tell you about cornbread. But I'm... too embarrassed to...tell you.” He announced on the other side.
“Because it's way too corny.” Rain mouthed just as Andy said it out loud.
“But I promise it's...uh-maize-ing. Y-You get it? Maize?”
She shook her head and curled her lips to the side, barely holding back a giggle.
“Wow, Andy. Just wow.”
Rain could practically hear her brother thinking of another joke to tell her as she splashed her face with water. It wasn’t until she started brushing her teeth when he started up again.
“Do you know why...b-birds always use coupons at the...m-market?”
She couldn't properly respond. Not with foamy, minty paste slushing around in her mouth. So she'll let him have this one. She didn't mind one bit.
“B-Because they're cheep!”
Rain still smiled, same as always.
