Chapter Text
March 15, 2018.
Omniscient narrator.
Teenage versions of Megan and Yoonchae were running around the schoolyard. Hand in hand, laughing as if the world belonged to them. No one else existed, only them.
"Promise me something, Yoon." Megan stopped and sat under a tree. "Promise me that when we're older, you'll become a great lawyer who will support both of us."
Yoonchae looked at her best friend as if she were the only woman in the world. After her proposal, she sat beside her and took her hand. There always had to be some contact between them, the other's presence gave them security. "And what will you be doing, Meimei?" she smiled.
"Well, I'll be able to do what I love, considering you'll be the one who is paying the bills," she laughed. "I could be a dancer or a music producer, can you imagine?" Her gaze was full of hope.
"I believe you can do anything you set your mind to" she leaned towards her. "So of course I can imagine it." Megan tightened her grip on their hands as their eyes met. She felt invincible when Yoonchae, the smartest person she knew, said things like that to her.
"But you take care of getting us out of poverty, okay?"
"I promise to give you the happy life you deserve, Megan," her voice sounded more honest, serious. "You'll be the best dancer the world has ever known, I promise you."
"I love you, Yoon" she rested her head on her best friend's shoulder in a gesture of peace and trust.
"I love you too, Meimei, always."
That day, Megan and Yoonchae weren't promising each other anything related to their professional futures.
In reality, they were promising to be together for all eternity. At 17, they were already aware that friendships break or paths simply diverge right after high school. They weren't going to let that happen to them. Where one is, the other will be, that's how it will always be. A love that everyone around them envied, and only they choose to interpret it as friendship. If only they knew that some promises are impossible to keep.
