Excerpt from chapter seven:
"Afterward they did a little more exploring. They found the master bedroom and dropped their bags there, and in the games room they found a large ostentatious chess set with faux-marble pieces. They set it up on the coffee table in the living room, Ilya sitting on a cushion on the ground and Shane across from him on the couch wrapped in a blanket. They were getting pretty good at the game. Shane had taken it seriously from the jump, which had forced Ilya to take it seriously in order to stay competitive, and now he knew about things like opening gambits. To combine it with Shane’s studies, they used Russian words for the pieces and for check. Beside the board they were holding hands – that was habit too, and whoever was white had to give up their right hand to hand holding and use their non-dominant hand for playing. The hand holding could become harsh squeezes and quasi thumb wars when things got tense, but so far Ilya was happy stroking his thumb over Shane’s knuckles. In the clear light of the room, Shane’s exhaustion was obvious on him, the shadows under his eyes and heavy hang of his shoulders. Ilya couldn’t believe it had ever been ambiguous. Even now, he could feel the temptation of not bringing up anything difficult, just basking in each other. When they were good it felt like nothing else."
