Work Text:

The four year old version of Izuku Midoriya was a lot of things, both good and bad. He was kind, talkative, energetic and his favorite fact about himself, (Note the use of the word fact.) He was going to be a hero! He was going to be a hero just like-
“Sorry kid, it's not gonna happen.” The doctor cut through his train of thought, cynical tone slicing open Izuku’s skin “Whatever do…whatever do you mean doctor?” His mom’s soft, tentative voice helped stop the bleeding with shaking hands
“Look here Midoriya-san,” the doctor started addressing his mother, making a point to look away from Izuku ‘maybe he’s mad at me’ the boy thought whose first instinct, like many other children’s, was to blame himself and not others. “Now you see here on the xray? The one of his feet specifically," he picked up a red marker from the counter pointing it at the pinkie toe, “Now right here as you can see there are two toe joints. 99.7% of people within the last year who have had the extra toe joint have turned out to be quirkless so unfortunately there's really no hope for your son Midoriya-san,” He said everything monotone like he wasn't punching Izuku in the gut. “The science isn’t exactly proven but it might as well be…”
He ended the sentence by tapping the marker onto the xray before setting the marker down and turning to face Inko. “So in short, your son will never develop a quirk. Ever.”
“Now Midoria-san,” the doctor started staring at his mother, “Don’t worry too much about this there are plenty of ways for you to deal with people like… Your son.” He handed her a blue, red and yellow pamphlet, any other day Izuku would have pointed out that it was All Might colors but today all he could do was sit with tears in his eyes yet unable to cry.
“Anyway I do have more people to see so have a nice day. goodbye,” he ended curtly his words shoving them out the door
Izuku and his mother trotted side by side down the hallway, the former craning his neck to look back into the office yet the only thing he saw was a trash-can lid opening and a yellow file being thrown in.
The car ride home was quiet though his Mother held her hand back behind her to hold her sons hand the other resting on the steering wheel until she suddenly spoke
“It’s going to be ok, Izuku,” her soft voice like a blanket wrapping around him, trying to protect him from the world, “we’re going to go home an see Daddy and we’ll eat ice cream and ill cook some kusudon for dinner ok baby?” and really it did sound nice but Izuku couldn't bring himself to smile, as much as he didn't want to hurt his moms feelings.
“Ok mama. That sounds nice.” His mom didn't answer but Izuku could see her shoulders shaking as she focused on the road home.

When Izuku and his mom got home and he unbuckled the car (all by himself) and hopped out, he trotted up to his mom just as she had started toeing off her shoes. He did the same and they stepped inside to see Hisashi
“Well hey nice of you to finally join me!” He spotted Izuku’s tear tracks and tilted his head. “Now what's got you down, son, you get your mom’s quirk instead of mine?” He joked laughing at his own wit as he reached down to ruffle his kid’s hair.
“Actualy Hisashi.. We need to talk. Preferably in the other room.” His mother gently, carefully stated for some odd reason, to Izuku it looked like she was a little bit afraid. His dad looked nervous but followed. Izuku soon heard muffled voices in the kitchen then the sound of glass shattering. He came into the scene of his mom meekly backing away from his dad and the floor of shattered glass, he could see cuts on her feet.
“The…The doctor gave us a pamphlet I think it has…it has some good groups-”
“Groups!? What would they help women!? Groups aren’t going to change the fact that your son’s defective! God how did this even-” staring enraged at his wife. “You,” he hissed, eyes narrowing, fingers raised to point accusingly at her. “You cheated… didn’t you? Huh?! Who was it!?” He enunciated his words by jabbing his finger into her chest right on the bone below her throat. Inko looked startled
“Cheat?! No I… No I would never Hisashi-"
"Don’t call me that! I don't want to hear my name in your mouth ever again, woman!” He began grabbing things from the house stomping between the 4 rooms in the apartment
“Hisa- uhm-, where are you going?!” Inko said, barely abiding by his wish.
“You’d like to know!” He shouted back.
“What about your son!?” She gestured to said boy who was squatting down with his hands on his ears. She was met with silence for a few moments though I'm not sure you could call it that because of how loud it was. His answer was quieter than the emptiness before it.

“I don't have a son”

Izuku was sitting in his house's computer room, the world around him crumbling, eaten by two stars, two issues that had collided together to create a black hole that was swallowing everything in its path. Izuku was four years old when his first black hole was formed. But it was far from his last. He smiled as best he could to his mom, even through the tears

“Do you…do you think I could still be a hero?”
