I once thought I was made of the Earth

Summary:

Short free-form poetry inspired by the image created by elizapad on tumblr likening bisexual to stalagmites and pansexual to stalactites.

Notes:

Based upon my own experience with having thought for years I was bisexual until I learned about pansexual and realized that's what I really was. Also includes the learning experiences of my youth in finding out that gender wasn't binary (and realizing I'm also genderfluid).

Work Text:

I once thought I was made of the Earth. A being stretching and yearning to be higher. Made of muscle and sinew and salt of the Earth. I once thought the world was defined in binary and existed on two fronts. Night and day. Awake and asleep. Boy and girl.

I stretched and I reached and things just never quite felt right. I reached for the sky and could never quite grasp. And then my eyes were opened and my wings were spread and I grasped the concept of between. Pre-dawn and dusk. Cat napping and those lucid moments between consciousness and not. All the wonderful things between boy and girl and outside of that tightly assigned binary.

I opened my eyes and I realized I'd been reaching for the sky when I already was the sky. I reached for the spaces between and and up and towards the ground. Everywhere around me I saw, I felt, I became.

I once thought I was made of Earth and now I know I am made of the Sky.
