a poem found in a borrowed jacket

Summary:

Simon Glass wrote this poem, folded it up, and put it in his jacket pocket the day before he knew Jack was going to borrow it for the outing they'd planned for months.

Jack read it, stared at the words for a solid minute, and cried.

Work Text:

you
radiant and beautiful
shining
glowing brighter
than the unspoken promise
binding our clasped hands.

you,
in all your many forms
in all your stained-glass glory
a kaleidoscope of wonder
ever-changing
colors whirling
yet your smile shines the same.

you,
vinyl brilliance
untarnished by time
burnished by each passing year
as all else fades to rust.

and me,
basking in your shining glow
your warmth on my face,
my arms, my heart—

you are the sun.
let me be your flower,
beautiful,
but only for so long.

i will love you until the moment my last petal falls.
