Work Text:

Eijirou wakes up to quiet curses and grumbles to his right. He smacks his dry lips and opens his eyes, squinting at the harsh sunlight peeking through the curtains. Looking to his side, Eijirou watches a familiar sight with a fond smile: Katsuki half naked crouching over and gathering up all the pillows and blankets and clothes he knocked off as he slept. Luckily, Eijirou always sleeps like a rock, otherwise, he would probably have eyebags as big as Shinsou’s. He sleeps soundly while his boyfriend tosses and turns like he is fighting whoever has pissed him off in his dreams.

Eijirou can’t help but to release rich notes of chocolate into the air. Katsuki stands up and catches Eijirou’s sleepy gaze. His scowl softens but quickly deepens again as shame flickers in his eyes. He grumbles out, “Did I wake you up?”

Sharp spice with a burnt edge conveys his worry and embarrassment. Eijirou hums a bit, slowly blinking the blurriness away. “The sun rising did.” He levels a cheeky smile at that and the chocolate turns unbearably sweet. His sun.

Katsuki scoffs and rolls his eyes, knowing what Eijirou meant.  He doesn’t apologize, but Eijirou knows he will be getting an extra serving of meat for breakfast to make up for it. The burnt smell fades away. Katsuki begins to place the blankets back on the bed. Eijirou stands up to help him. Together they reconstruct the nest. At this point, Katsuki no longer needs to yell orders at Eijirou. This routine is well practiced by now.

Once the nest is made, they get ready for the day in the bathroom. Eijirou fondly grins at Katsuki’s germ death chant as they brush their teeth. He stays to finish his hair care routine while Katsuki heads to the kitchen. It takes a lot of work to prevent dried out hair from all the dye.

After finishing up, Eijirou walks in to Katsuki whipping up breakfast. He wraps his arms around Katsuki’s thin waist to watch. His boyfriend roughly elbows him off and shoves a cup of coffee at him. Eijirou sits down at the table and drinks. He has an excellent view from here. Eijirou watches Katsuki rapidly and precisely chop up vegetables, roll up meat, and season the dishes. Soon, Katsuki plates the rice, fish, miso soup, and pork wrapped mushrooms. Like he thought, there is double the meat he usually receives.

“Itadakimasu.”

Eijirou pulls Katsuki’s plate over to his side and plucks out the bones with ease before putting it back. Katsuki’s fine motor control has improved greatly since the war, but Eijirou is used to helping out with small things. Katsuki stopped complaining about it a long time ago. Eijirou barely gets an eye roll now.

Focusing on his breakfast, Eijirou shoves pork and enoki into his mouth, savoring the flavor. He shuts his eyes and savors the flavor, letting a pleased hum out. Eijirou smiles a bit at the sweetened spice. He opens his eyes to see Katsuki looking at him fond;y as he starts to eat his own meal.

After they eat, Eijirou washes the dishes as Katsuki gets dressed. He flops down onto the couch after drying everything. Instead of joining him on the couch, Katsuki heads to the door. He needs to meet up with Shouto about another ad shoot. Eijirou sighs and slumps down, pouting slightly. He really wanted to hang out with Katsuki all day today. It’s rare their breaks line up although it has been easier since they’ve opened up their own agencies.

Eijirou scrolls on his phone while some random show plays in the background. His eyes sweep past posts, pausing to like or save a few that are funny to share with Katsuki later. As he scrolls down, something flashes by that catches his attention. Eijirou scrolls back up to an advertisement: Bed Frames for Your Restless Omega. He clicks on it and a new tab pops up on their shop. Eijirou frowns at the selection. Most of the frames look like cribs, apparently for children, and are extremely stereotypical at that. Pastel pinks and purples with a few blues blur as Eijirou swipes through. Sighing, he exits out.

This does give him an idea, though. Eijirou searches for adult bed frames for omegas. He adds tossing and turning to the search, as well. More children’s beds pop up despite the ‘adult’ keyword. Eijirou rolls his eyes and researches with “-child” and “-kid” included. Finally, frames that Katsuki would enjoy pop up. There are plenty of pastel colored ones still, but there are bolder ones, too. Eijirou soon sees one that would work well. It is sleek, black painted wood with short walls surrounding the sides. It also includes padding for the sides and bottom that can easily be put in or removed. This is perfect. Eijirou barely glances at the price before buying it. Whatever. What’s the point of being paid so much for hero work if he can’t splurge it for the people he loves every once in a while?

Eijirou also orders a mattress once he thinks about it more. Theirs is pretty old by now. Might as well get a new one to go with a new frame. The mattress and frame should come in next week. Eijirou is already planning on taking the day off to build it. He grins excitedly; he can’t wait.

Soon, next week arrives. Katsuki has a patrol in the morning and reports to submit in the afternoon, so Eijirou should have plenty of time. The box is dropped off at noon. Eijirou pushes their old bed to one side to make room for the new one. He hardens his fingers and rips through the tape and cardboard. Pieces of wood, padding, and bags of screws fall out onto the floor. He rifles around until he finds the instructions taped under one of the frame pieces. Aha! His grin shines brightly on his face only to dim after scanning them over. Is this even in Japanese? What the hell?

Eijirou squints as he tries to decipher the steps vaguely described and poorly drawn diagrams. How did he do this last time? Actually, has he ever put a bed together? Eijirou desperately tries to remember. He may have helped his moms’ once, maybe. Eijirou looks at the old bed. Katsuki definitely made that one by himself. Eijirou shakes his head and slams his fists together, determined. He went to the top hero school in Japan. Surely, he can figure this out.

“You got this!” He cheers himself on.

After four hours, Eijirou can say he certainly does not got this. This is awful. Parts of the frame are strewn all over the floor. A couple of pieces lie in front of him after he had to deconstruct them. The screws he used for one section needed to be removed for a different one since the other screws didn’t end up fitting in any others. Frustration boils up like a tea kettle.

Why?! Why the fuck would those screws be taped to that part and not the other then?! And why the hell are half these holes so damned small?! It looks like they shoved a needle through some of these shitty pieces.

Eijirou really wanted this to be done before Katsuki got home. He had more than enough time. He should have finished this with plenty of time to spare. Katsuki shouldn’t have to deal with his failure. Bitter chocolate seeps out at his defeat, spreading throughout every part of the apartment.

Suddenly, loud steps sound out as Katsuki storms into their bedroom, holding his nose. Eijirou can practically taste the extreme spiciness of his boyfriend’s scent. Anger and worry burn intensely in his red eyes. They turn to confusion as Katsuki takes in the disorganized mess.

Eijirou pumps out more bitter notes as he realizes Katsuki is finally home to see this. Katsuki kneels down next to him and pulls him into a hug, sliding his wrists past Eijirou’s neck, scenting him with calming pheromones. They breathe in the tasty smell of spicy chocolate. Katsuki runs his hands through Eijirou’s hair and lets out a rough, stuttering purr like someone is revving up an old motor engine. Eijirou’s frustration fades as they sit together. Katsuki, eventually, leans back to look at him.

“What happened here?” He asked, in a calmer tone than he should have considering the state of their bedroom.

Instead of verbally answering, Eijirou hands him the stupid fucking instruction manual. Katsuki looks at the opened pages, then turns to the front. Surprise fills the air, followed shortly by a gentle happiness that sweetens the spice. Eijirou pouts a bit. He really wanted to have everything ready by the time Katsuki got home to surprise him–not this disaster. A flick on his head brings his attention back to Katsuki.

Katsuki scowls and rolls his eyes, “Whatever dumb bullshit you’re thinking, knock it the fuck off right now. Why the hell would I be mad at something you bought for me?! Especially somethin’ like this…”

“That’s not it,” Eijirou grumbles. He receives a raised eyebrow and a glare demanding further explanation. “I wanted it to be fully set up for you when you got home. Frame and mattress and everything. The only thing we should have done together was move your nest. I would have taken apart the old bed. I can do that much-”

A slightly harsher hit to his head breaks him out of those deprecating thoughts. Eijirou lets out a small sound of pain. Katsuki’s eyes pierce through his, as if he could see every hidden part of Eijirou. Not that there are any hidden parts at this point. Not after so long together… and especially, not with someone like Katsuki who is so amazing at reading him.

“Don’t do this shit,” Katsuki scolds him. “We both know you can do so much more than rip a shitty, old bed apart. Who was the one that held up a building for over an hour so those people with you wouldn’t die, huh? That certainly wasn’t me. What about when you calmed down a lost little girl who had lost control of her quirk? Definitely wasn’t me. Or when you…”

Katsuki goes on to rant about every achievement, and Eijirou looks down, embarrassment apparent across his blushing face and through souring chocolate. A calloused hand cups his chin and forces his face back up. Katsuki’s eyes have softened up, and he continues, “That’s all you, Eijirou. You’ve done so much. Don’t act like not setting this up in time is some catastrophic failure. Besides, I’d rather do this shit together anyways. Quality bonding time or whatever.” Katsuki is the one to look away embarrassed this time.

The air turns sweet again. Eijirou gives a wobbly smile. He is so lucky to be with Katsuki, with someone so manly and compassionate in his own ways. Katsuki turns to him and can’t help a small smile of his own. He leans in to give Eijirou a quick kiss before grumbling, “C’mon. Let’s fuckin’ do this then.”

With that, they begin. Katsuki reads through the instructions and hands Eijirou the parts and screws needed. He helps hold the pieces together as Eijirou drills them together. Soon, the bed looks exactly like the picture and the mattress is laid down, too.

Then, they start moving the nest over. Each blanket and pillow and clothing item is in the exact place it was before. Once everything is sorted, Katsuki orders takeout while Eijirou takes the old bed out. They quickly eat and get ready for bed, too tired to do much else.

When Eijirou wakes up, he is confused at first. He doesn’t see or hear Katsuki. A warm arm brushes over his side and hair tickles his chest. He peers down to see his sun hasn’t risen yet, still content to lay in bed. Eijirou takes in the rest of the bed. It’s still a bit messed up from Katsuki’s tossing and turning but nothing’s missing. Good enough. He hides his grin in Katsuki’s hair. Katsuki wakes up an hour later and examines his nest. He lets out a pleased purr, and Eijirou can’t hide his grin now. They both fix up what is out of place, which goes faster than normal.

They get ready for the day, and Eijirou receives extra meat and a protein shake as thanks. After eating, Katsuki washes dishes, so Eijirou can get ready for his morning patrol. He spikes up his hair and slaps on a scent patch before kissing Katsuki goodbye. He lingers until Katsuki notices the time and shoves him towards the door.

“Go kick some ass, Red! Like you always do.” Katsuki grins widely at him and Eijirou mirrors him.

He knocks his fists together, pumped up. “I won’t let you down.”

As Eijirou heads out the door, he faintly hears, “You never do” as he shuts the door. Those parting words from his sun warms his chest and makes his face ache. Eijirou’s wide smile stays plastered on for the rest of the day only loosening up when he finally makes it back home.

Notes:

I have always wondered about this ever since I first read an ABO fic. When I was younger, I tossed and turned a lot when I slept and still do some nights, and I knew any sort of nest would have been destroyed if I slept in it. I get nests would get reorganized for other reasons, but I’ve never read it be done for anything mundane like just sleeping.
Also might do a fic about Omega Katsuki purring for the first time after the war and realizing that it sounds different–loud and broken up. Definitely should finish some of my other drafts first, though.
