The New Music Teacher

Summary:

“What do you mean ‘there’s no music teacher!’” Poro-chan swooned in shock. “How could you deprive these poor students of a proper education, Sully! This must be fixed immediately!” They cried, now shaking the Chairdemon violently.

Chapter Text

“You wanted to speak to me Maestro?” The green haired deviola player asked as she entered the director of the Marquestra of the Dande Group’s office.

“Yes.” Came Meimei’s soft yet austere voice. Without looking up she gestured for Lucy to sit on the large red velvet couch located in the corner of the room.

Lucy cautiously obliged, wondering what she wanted to talk about. ‘This must be about our latest concert.’ She thought, twirling her long green hair nervously.

The performance had only been two days ago. The week before which, Meimei had suddenly decided to change the repertoire for. She had decided to give Lucy a solo. It had gone well despite the lack of preparation, or at least she thought it had.

The sound of shuffling papers brought her back to the present. Her pink eyes followed Meimei as she made her way over to the extra small chair that sat on the other side of the coffee table in front of the couch. She slid a stack of papers over to Lucy.

Lucy’s brows furrowed. “This is a list of students from the Bablys school.” She stated in confusion.

“Exactly. This is a list of students who show promise in music. I have compiled more detailed information about each individual and all the notes I made about the recent Bablys Music Festival.” She said, pointing at the papers now in Lucy’s hands.

“I’m afraid I still don’t understand Maestro. What does this have to do with me?” The deviola player asked. Her bat like ears swivel all the way forward to make sure she did miss any words.

“They have been without an official music program for quite some time. Because of this I believe that there is much untapped potential lying dominant within their walls. In other words, I recommend you to the Chairdemon as a new music teacher.” The many-eared woman informed in a nonchalant manner.

“But… I’m not a teacher! — at least not outside of the couple of private lessons I teach on the side.” Lucy exclaimed.

Meimei chuckled a bit. “I think you underestimated yourself. I have observed your skill over the past couple of years. You have experience with a broad range of instruments and styles, and you have demonstrated a unique ability for assisting new marquestra members whenever they are struggling. I’m only suggesting you try it out for a year, at least to help them set up the program.” She leaned forward to rest her chin in her hands. A mischievous smile formed on her face. “I believe it would be a good challenge for you.”

Lucy sat back to think for a moment, feeling herself sink into the plush fabric. “But, don’t you have to be a rank Zayin (7) to become a teacher at Bablys?”

“You are correct.” She nodded.

“I’m only a Vav (6) though. I was only able to earn it because of my work on archiving ancient magical chants and tunes.”

“If you were a rank seven, would you then consider taking the job.”

“I mean… maybe. But I don’t even know what I could do for a Scala test. Could I even get it done in time for the next school year?”

“Don’t worry, that won’t be a problem.” Meimei said, pulling an envelope out of her lapel pocket.

Lucy tentatively took it from her. She recognized the seal. It was the mark of the 'Legendary Sound Demon'. Her hands shook as she carefully opened it. Out came a new shiny rank badge accompanied by a short note.

“Alukah Lucy. I, Amduscias Poro, here by grant you the rank of Zayin following your Scala exam.” The letters glistened gold.

“What! But I never signed up for a Scala exam!” Her voice raised exactly an octave. That’s when it dawned on her. ‘This was about the solo…’

“Sorry I didn’t tell you before. It was a last minute decision Poro-san and I made.”

Lucy’s tail curled tightly up against her back as a chill ran up her spine. Meime wasn’t asking her to become a teacher, she was demanding it.

“Um, well… I will d-definitely take this opportunity into c-consideration.” The words tumbled out of her mouth.

“Good. I’m glad to hear that.” Meimei smiled.

‘Dear Derkila, she is one scary demoness.’ Lucy realized.
