Summary:

It was inevitable if the technology existed that it would be used and it would be abused. Given that, wasn’t it better for Phil to be a part of the Dollhouse, making sure that the Dolls were kept safe, than out there in the world obliviously letting the abuse happen? At least, that’s what he had to tell himself to come to work every morning.

Phil Lester is a "Handler" at the Dollhouse, an underground organization that offers their elite clientele access to programmable human "Dolls": real people stripped of their memories and re-coded to become the objects of fantasy or nightmare. Phil's job is to protect his assigned Doll, Delta, from those same clients.

Phil's good at his job, and so is Delta, until someone from the Doll's past life recognizes him in the field. In order to cover it up, the Dollhouse makes an unusual decision: reprogram Delta with his original Personality, at least for a little while.

And so Daniel Howell wakes up. And nothing is how he expected.

Hello Pham! Welcome to the Dollhouse AU.

Before we get into it, I’d like to give some context and set some boundaries. The tl;dr is that a) DNP are dolls (and maybe Dolls), and b) you do not need to have watch the TV show Dollhouse to read this phic. That said, I’d appreciate if you could stick with me for a second here, so we can both get a little more out of this.

  1. The idea for this fic came to me after the Buffy Philm club, when it became apparent there was a whole swath of phannies who were about to watch Buffy for the first time (y’all, I’m so jealous of your journey right now, take me back!). But the thing about watching BTVS is, if you’re watching Buffy now, eventually you’re watching Dollhouse. I don’t make the rules, that’s just how to goes. Blame he-who-was-cancelled if you must, or irl!Phil for starting you on the journey if you like.

  2. Give the absolute prevalence of doll imagery in the DNP universe and meta [sims, tamadochi, interactive introverts, viewers pick my outfits, dress to impress, the TIT dioramas, poppy playtime; even things like the plushies (golden pig and pheal included) and some of the more out-there games (date everything!?!) are deeply doll-coded, as are all the baking costumes etc.] it seemed necessary to reflect on those ideas inside a pre-made doll-themed sci-fi universe entirely created to investigate the boundaries between persona/personality/performance/personhood, and between fantasy/pleasure/consent/cost. Thematically, the venn diagram between DNP and Dollhouse is a circle.

  3. For those who haven’t watched Dollhouse: it is and was inarguably one of the most fucked up concepts to ever grace primetime television? 2009 was weird y’all. The pitch is that a secret company has invented a mind-control technology that allows them to turn real people into programmable dolls, who they then rent out to the super elite, rich, and scary. Like, excuse me? Why was this allowed to be made? Anyways, the show starts off as case-of-the-week style, with Eliza Dushku (aka. Faith, aka. why you are going to end up watching this show despite my warnings here) as the primary Doll, who takes on a new character personality each week. However, the universe world-building gets super weird super-fast and is even more fucked up than the base concept. I would summarize the (two season) series trajectory as: mid-intriguing-mid-good-WAIT WHAT-okay-no that’s disappointing what are you doing-VERY GOOD-no this is just fucked up and confusing now-WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT’S THE END. So, if you haven’t watched yet, good luck with that.

  4. All that said, you do not need to have watched Dollhouse to read, follow, and enjoy this story. I’ve put any necessary world building information inside of it, none of which is a spoiler for the show (there are tons of easter eggs, if you’re a Dollhouse fan, however). There’s no reference to the characters or settings in the TV show, other than the lightest of background flavouring. Just know if something seems crazy fucked up, blame Joss, and if it seems really adorable and/or sexy I will take all the credit, thank you. DNP get credit for being tailor made to be slipped into this story, looking hot while doing it, and maybe pushing against our sense of moral, sexual, and parasocial boundaries in the process.

  5. So, about the boundaries. Consent in the Dollhouse universe is inherently fucked. Once a person has been turned into a Doll, it become fundamentally impossible to say what situations and scripts they are opting into by choice and which by coercion. The show does an incredibly mid-to-horrendous job of exploring and or challenging that concept beyond full-out-sexual-violence-is-bad. I’ve tried to do a better job of nuancing the premise here, not at least because the subtextual question is not ‘can the Doll consent to this scene’ but ‘can DNP consent to this scene being written?’ [Thanks, kings, for TBV, otherwise there’s no way in hell I’d dare do this whole thought experiment.] The rules I’ve set for myself here are: sex and violence that the Dolls don’t want will happen off page; it’ll be mentioned but you won’t be asked to imagine it. Sex that the Dolls do want happens on page, although for most of the first act we’re sticking to about an M-level rating until… well you’ll see.
