Chapter Text
Harry watched in a fog as his mothers form fell to the ground, dead the second the toxic green light touched her. She died screaming, a fierce wall between the threat and her child, but it was enough. The Man's face took on a cruel smile, waving his wand as he shouts “AVADA KEDABRA”, and then infant Harry's shield from the sinister man was gone. Baby Harry was crying softly, confused and wondering why his mom was sleeping, when the strange man approached him.
Harry watches as he whimpers quietly, eyes starting to his fallen mother before they return to the man, confusion filling his eyes. The man flinches slightly, taken back by how vivid his eyes are, almost as much as the killing curse itself. He quickly shakes himself out of his thoughts, his manic grin returning full force. He mumbles something to the baby, who tilts his head slightly to the side, whining tampering off by the strange man. Then the man stands up straight. He backs up slightly, pointing his wand at the baby.
“AVADA KEDABRA”
He says, laughing maniacally, watching as the child falls limp in the crib. But something else happens. As soon as the spell touches the baby, it rebounds off him and hits the mad man. The man screams, Hissing loudly in pain as he slowly turns to dust, cursing the gods all the way to his temporary grave.
Then he's gone.
Harry's gone.
The strange man's gone.
Even Harry's mother's gone.
The only one left is Harry, or, well the other Harry. He's been standing, watching the decades of memories pass by in a loop.
But then someone shows up. This part always gets fuzzy for him. He remembers being cold at first, then, as the black figure cradles his infant body, he remembers warmth, safety, and promises. But it always changes each time he passes the memory. Sometimes, the figure just sits there, rocking him till he's breathing again, others asking if I wanted to be theirs for the rest of eternity. Once, they even called him their child, making warmth spread through his chest.
Then they would wave their hand around for a moment, saying nothing, just looking into his eyes as they do, before their hand comes to rest in the middle of his chest, mumbling a couple words before carefully putting him back in the cradle.
They watched him for a moment, then disappeared into the shadows as Sirius comes barging into the room, eyes widen as he sees Lily's body dead on the floor, a startled cry leaving his lips before his eyes snap to the cradle, eyes widening as he spots a tearful Harry looking back at him, lip trembling slightly at the fact his new friend left. But Sirius didn't know why he was crying, he thought he was hurt, rightfully so by the small stream of blood slowly dripping down his face.
Sirius whines slightly at the sight of blood anywhere on his pup, and goes to run over to him, but the next second he's rigged. His eyes go full and he loses the tension previously in his body. He calmly walks over, picks Harry up, and walks out of the house. Once they are out, Sirius meets a huge man, though Harry thought he looked oddly happy for being awake so late. His younger counterpart was then dropped into the large man's hands.
Sirius then disappeared, walking off in a random direction, tossing the tall man his keys as he went. He wobbles slightly as he walks, kind of like a drunk person, before disappearing from Harry's sight completely.
About 30 minutes later, little Harry is crying slightly in a basket on a porch, cold and hungry. The last time he's had anything to eat was an hour before his bed time, and then 3 hours after he went to sleep all this happened and now baby Harry is hungry.
After his cries go unanswered for a while, he somehow manages to go to sleep.
_____________
Harry remembers plenty of things in his 50 years of life, but this night was his turning point. No, not because his parents died. It's because this is the night he met Mother Death. She says that normally she takes people without much thought, after being alive since the beginning, you grow used to taking the unprepared or the unexpected. But, she felt something in him that night.
A pull.
No, this wasn't one of those pulls that creatures have, it's a pull a parental figure would feel for a child. After all, she was the great Mother Death, she doesn't require mates or any of the sort. But when specific requirements are met, (Mother refused to tell him of course, no metal knows the requirements to get the great honor of being acknowledged by her as her child and still walk this earth) she is allowed to turn them into one of her beloved reapers.
That's what the pull means to her, but she was further enthralled by the idea when she held him. It was like he was perfectly created for her arms, to be her child for all eternity and even further if they so wished. She lightly took in his scent, and purred slightly. He was a Dragel cub by the smell alone, and she immediately wanted to take him to her home, to her room, to keep him safe forever and ever and ever-
But she couldn't. He had a tie of destiny forced on him, making her eyes narrow. She huffed, held him a bit longer and when she felt someone approach the house, she put a claiming seal on his soul, so no matter what, no matter where, he's always hers.
She did a quick chant, stared at him for a moment, then bled into the shadows when she felt the person stumble to the door. She proceeded to keep an eye on him from her home, while also watching over her court, wishing for the day she could bring him there.
Alas, he was born in the forgotten plains. The deepest depths of the fae realm, where only the pests can survive. There's hardly enough magic on those planets to even support their current generation, and the Magic-less humans aren't making it any better. There were bombs and wars making more and more animals go extinct as time went on, and at some point even trees were so rare you would be lucky to see one in your life.
She made sure to keep a close eye on this world till she could get her child out of it. At some point the humans found a fae planet a few light years away, and she was happy they did, because the magic side of this world is getting worse by the day.
Her child fulfilled his destiny that was complete, only for him to become the ‘Puppeteers’ newest plaything. It's a good thing that there is so little magic on this planet that it is basically a forcefield on its own, and in his limited lifetime she doubts he'll live long enough to find a world that he can get to that's powerful enough to bring him anywhere significant. She has ways to make sure of it.
Anyways, this new world is a fae planet called Pandora, and in a couple years they will start recruiting for help, and she wants her child there. She wants him safe, happy, and most of all off of that disintegrating pile of rocks. Their predecessors did too much damage and it's now past the point of no return, so it's time for her child to leave this place, and join the rest of the realms.
Harry, however, was hesitant. He's never found himself to be quite smart enough to join the scientists, so even if he tried he doesn't think he could do it, But he certainly doesn't want to be a soldier again. He was one for long enough, he's tired of that life.
And that scared Mother. Not truly, no single thing can scare something that's been around for a millenia. This child, however, was going to be the death of her. Then, an idea struck her. She rushed to contact the god of this world, ‘Eywa’ as her children called her, for assistance.
And together they plotted.
And came across a deal.
While they were doing this, Harry met a muggle called Tom, and they hit it off. They talked about many things, though Tom mostly rambled about his brother, and Harry mostly talked about his late friends and family. Tom was the one who convinced Harry to join the avatar program, with all the talk of the animals. Harry was never that interested in plants, really, He had enough of them in his childhood. Plus his deep resentment of being forced to be a figurehead and child soldier means he didn't want to be a guard or anything like that anytime soon.
But he knew since the first time he talked to a snake, the first time he threaded his fingers through Hedwig’s feathers, the feeling of Leather as he pet the surprisingly peaceful carnivorous Thestrals that pulled the wagons to Hogwarts. He loves animals. It saddens him that the older he gets, the less likely he is to see any, as even the magical creatures have disappeared.
This, however, is a whole new planet full of new animals to know and, hopefully, befriend. Though Harry knows that's probably just wishful thinking, he decides to join Tom in the Avatar program.
It was hard, more difficult than he thought. It was almost as if the letters were twisting themselves in ways he didn't- couldn't- understand no matter how hard he tried. It's a good thing Tom was willing to help. Tom would read aloud, and Harry would try his best to write down the important bits.
It was difficult, but they managed to pass. Tom, of course, got a better grade than Harry, but they both managed, as did Tom's other friend Norm. By the time Mother Death returned, He was halfway through his training, which she was surprised, but pleased. She decided not to tell him the deal, figuring he would be able to figure it out.
It was about a week before departure, and all three of them decided to have a small party before the three left for Pandora. About halfway through the night, Norm was passed out, Harry was pleasantly Tipsy, and Tom was only slightly better than Harry.
At some point Harry must have dozed off, cuz when he opened his eyes, it was an hour later and Tom was nowhere in sight. Harry didn't panic, instead he waited a while, listening, but heard nothing. So he got up, groaning softly as he searched the house for Tom.
Once.
Twice.
Even three.
But Tom was nowhere to be found.
Later, after frantically calling every number he found in Tom's phone that was left in the apartment, asking if they've seen him, Harry gets a call from Jake, whose voice sounded raw and aching. Harry opens his mouth to ask a question, but three words from Jake makes his eyes go wide and his arms go limp
He did it again. He lost someone close to him and couldn't keep any of the promises they gave each other. He hung up the phone and tried to go to bed, but old memories kept him awake.
The week passed quickly.
Morge, Funeral, papers.
Now the RDA is inviting Jake to be a driver so the avatar doesn't get ‘wastes’ on Jakes dead twin, my friend
Then, the next thing I know I can vaguely feel Mother cheering quietly as we board the ship. We are quickly secured and put in H
yper sleep until they reach Pandora, and from then to Pandora I was in Mothers loving embrace.
