The Wayne Onmyōryō

Summary:

The young onmyōji Damian Wayne has never believed that yōkai can be divided into good and evil.

Not until his father casts him out of the mountain estate—and he gradually finds himself accompanied by Dick, whose true identity remains a mystery. Jason, a red oni tormented by his inner demons, and Tim, a peculiar three-tailed fox.

However long the road ahead may be, Damian must discover his own sense of justice through exorcisms, adventures, and the strange companions who choose to walk beside him.

Notes:

The style of this story is inspired by Japanese yōkai bestiaries and works such as The 《Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan》 and 《Natsume’s Book of Friends》.

I wanted to explore a different kind of possibility. If supernatural folklore and tales of spirits are not your thing, this series may not be for you. But if you are interested in yōkai culture, an onmyōji Damian travelling alongside a Batfamily made entirely of monsters sounds rather fun, doesn’t it?

Chapter 1: Basic Setting

Chapter Text

【Onmyōji】Human practitioners capable of sensing and wielding spiritual power. Through barriers, talismans, rituals, and contracts, they can exorcise evil spirits, subdue yōkai, or bind them as shikigami.

【Onmyōryō】An organisation and residence established and inherited by generations of onmyōji. It is responsible for handling supernatural disasters within its territory and maintaining order between humans and yōkai. Essentially, it is the family headquarters.

【Yōkai】Nonhuman beings born from the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, the lingering attachments of living things, or the emotions of humanity. Some are vicious monsters that devour humans, while others protect mountains and rivers or live peacefully alongside mankind.

【The Kingdom of Gotham】The ancient kingdom in which the Wayne Onmyōryō is located. Perpetually shrouded in dark clouds and overflowing with supernatural energy, it is a land where humans and the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons coexist in a fragile balance.

【The Wayne Onmyōryō】

Bruce Wayne: The ninth head of the main Wayne family.

In the human world, he is an extraordinarily wealthy nobleman. Among onmyōji, however, he is one of the exceedingly rare practitioners who specialises in physical combat.

He is particularly skilled in high-tech cyber exorcism. Bruce is so terrifyingly competent that he barely needs shikigami at all. He is, quite literally, a one-man army.

【Bruce’s Shikigami】

Alfred Pennyworth: The trusted right hand of every generation of Wayne family heads. Alfred is, in truth, a great yōkai known as the Nightmare, as well as one of the most respected representatives of the Western Demon Realm.

Dick Grayson: A blue tengu disguised as a human and a wild yōkai taken in by Bruce. Dick’s parents were murdered, and their souls were stolen by their killer to forge a sacred weapon. Still only a young tengu at the time, Dick was rescued and raised by Bruce. To repay this kindness, he became Bruce’s shikigami as well as his adopted son. Later, unable to stop worrying about Damian, Dick follows him down the mountain to accompany him on his journey. In every sense of the word, he becomes Damian’s first companion.

Leslie Thompkins: A healing shikigami known as an Ao Nyōbō. Leslie was originally a mirror belonging to a renowned local physician. After her owner’s death, the mirror awakened as a tsukumogami. Carrying on the doctor’s compassion and determination to save lives, she eventually transformed into an Ao Nyōbō. Her true form is an ancient bronze mirror. After coming under Bruce’s protection, she became one of the shikigami residing within the Wayne Onmyōryō. Her power is healing, and she inherited all the extraordinary medical knowledge and skill of her former owner.

【Other Core Members of the Wayne Onmyōryō】

Damian al Ghul Wayne: Damian was raised by the League of Assassins and taught from childhood that yōkai were either wicked creatures or tools to be controlled. Ambitious, proud, and exceptionally gifted, he began travelling with his mother and instructors at a very young age, killing or subduing yōkai wherever he went. His hands have long been stained with blood. Talia eventually sent him to the Wayne Onmyōryō to study under his father, deliberately intending for Damian to gain access to Bruce’s knowledge, influence, and resources.

Jason Todd: A half-human, half-yōkai red oni who was once Bruce’s adopted son and apprentice. Jason was killed by the Joker during a previous Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. After sleeping for seventy-seven days, he awakened once more—but by then, he had transformed completely into an oni. Every trace of his humanity had vanished. Jason fled into the mountains and claimed the land as his own. After killing the former oni god who ruled the region, he became the undisputed lord of the surrounding territory.

He almost always wears a red oni mask. The mask was, in fact, a gift from Damian when Damian was still a child.

Tim Drake: A cunning and elusive century-old fox yōkai. Despite his true age, Tim’s youthful appearance led Bruce to take him in as an adopted son. He has lived around the Wayne Mountains for many years. Foxes are born with an instinct for attaching themselves to powerful masters. Tim, however, has no intention of remaining someone’s shikigami forever.

He dreams of becoming a nine-tailed fox and escaping the cycle of cause and consequence that binds every living thing in the world. Tim and Damian are natural enemies who argue constantly. Despite this, Tim eventually becomes one of Damian’s personal shikigami.

Barbara Gordon: Barbara has used a wheelchair since an accident, but much of the work within the Onmyōryō—including diplomacy, investigations, and intelligence gathering—is handled by her. She is also a remarkably powerful onmyōji in her own right, possessing exceptional spiritual perception and psychic sensitivity.

【Barbara’s Shikigami】

Stephanie Brown: A lively, troublemaking kamaitachi with a deep affection for humans. During an accident, Stephanie unintentionally revealed her true form and was consequently branded a dangerous yōkai by other onmyōji. After investigating the incident and uncovering the truth, Barbara protected her. Out of gratitude, Stephanie willingly formed a contract with Barbara and became a shikigami specialising in reconnaissance and tracking.

Cassandra Cain: A quiet and reserved hundred-eyed yōkai. Through her countless eyes, Cassandra can see through a person’s movements, killing intent, and lies. However, this ability also forces her to endure a kind of suffering that few others could ever understand. Barbara gave her a place where she could belong. From that moment onward, Cassandra became Barbara’s most trusted shikigami and one of the central members of the Wayne Onmyōryō.

【Other Organisations】

The Justice League: A secret alliance formed by the greatest onmyōji, divine beings, and powerful yōkai from many different kingdoms. The League specialises in confronting supernatural disasters severe enough to threaten the entire world. Although its members hold vastly different beliefs and loyalties, they share one conviction: power should not exist solely for the purpose of domination. As the head of the Wayne Onmyōryō, Bruce was one of the League’s earliest core members.

The League of Assassins: An ancient and rigidly hierarchical organisation of onmyōji. The League believes that yōkai are inherently evil and must therefore be subdued, exploited, or exterminated entirely. Its leader, Ra’s al Ghul, is obsessed with immortality and the forbidden art of transferring the soul from one body to another. For centuries, he has collected powerful yōkai, spiritual ley lines, and secret techniques in an attempt to establish an eternal order ruled entirely by himself.

The Night Parade of a Hundred Spirits: The most profane of all rituals, unleashed by the Joker during the Hour of Twilight. When the ritual begins, yin and yang are overturned, and the boundary between life and death collapses. Countless malevolent spirits under the Joker’s command pour into the human world, leaving behind nothing but mad laughter, bloodshed, and grudges that refuse to fade.
