Southern Sun's Blessing

Summary:

After 800+ years of being denied a sacred yet complicated duty regarding the fetus ghost, CuoCuo, Feng Xin is finally able to fulfil a life long dream of being a father. Although his child is a wrath-level ghost, he is committed to caring and protecting his bloodline, even as a god. One peaceful day after countless hours of answering prayers and making his rounds in his territory, Feng Xin bonds with his ghost baby until golden light shows him a glimpse into an alternate reality that was ultimately taken from CuoCuo. Mu Qing, having come by to check in on his fellow God of the South, witnesses this precious moment and they both begin to talk and reminisce about their past, leading to a tender moment between the secret lovers and the child they are co-parenting together.

Dadandbaby

🌅

In the eight-hundred years in which Feng Xin had been a god, there had been one particular well-kept wish he hadn't been able to act upon.

Raising a child.

A duty to fatherhood was an arduous and complex task for those who do end up as fathers, intentionally or not, and yet Feng Xin had always secretly wanted a family of his own. Especially when he met his first love, that beautiful courtesan he spent a night with.

It had been a massive shock to his system when he found out the woman he had been in love with, the woman he had worked hard to buy out her freedom, was the mother of that temperamental ghost fetus that had been terrorising others.

And the ghost's father was him.

He had sired that ghost and it shared its bloodline with him.

The palace of Nan Yang - with its golden roofs and spires that ascended to the cloud-tops amongst all the other palaces and temples that clustered the vast landscape - was unusually quiet yet it still was bathed in the divine sunlight that reflected off of the gold-plated panels. Most of the time the palace would be alive with hustle and bustle as General Nan Yang's servants and disciples would fill the hallways whilst they went about their duties and the commanding figure of the General himself would be seen in chambers and the training ground, fulfilling his duties.

But it was quiet. Barely a person mingling in the corridors of the palace.

Inside the chamber belonging to the stoic and loyal Martial God of the Southeast, was Feng Xin himself lying on his back, with a large rug splayed out beneath him for comfort and support, suspending a tiny, smoky-grey child dressed in a light auburn-red robe who was laughing joyfully every time it was lifted up before being put back down, the child’s laughter echoed around the chamber, the sound of innocent joy. All around Feng Xin lay blankets, pillows and toys - figures carved for high quality wood and lacquer from horses to fake blunt edged spears to a wooden bow and arrows set to stuffed animal plushies. He had been playing with his son a while before, acting out little games and scenarios with his son to help with his imagination.

“CuoCuo's high up again! He's flying!” Feng Xin cooed, his eyes lighting up and a soft smile graced his lips as he imagined his son flying high amongst the clouds, free like a bird.

CuoCuo, as that was the child's name, was once the wrathful ghost fetus who would bite his father and never listen to a single word anyone said. But things were different. The ghost baby was now giggling and squealing at the motion of flying, rays of sunlight streamed through the window and bathed the baby in a heavenly shine - something that he had once been denied.

Feng Xin gazed up at his little baby, cloaked in a fine grey mist, as he gently used CuoCuo as weightlifts to train his arms and make the baby giggle.

“CuoCuo is flying high. Helping Fuqin with his exercise, aren't you?” He cooed, flashing a bright grin and CuoCuo responded with a gurgle and another babble of a laugh, high-pitched and filled with happiness. Feng Xin couldn't help but grin even more at the sight of his son having fun at being a baby.

Like he was meant to.

He let out a jovial laugh as he watched CuoCuo kick his little ghost legs in the air as if he was swimming. Feng Xin lifted CuoCuo as high as he physically could, making funny raspberry noises to entertain his son and make him laugh just as the celestial sunlight shone down on the ghost baby once again, its golden light causing something to happen.

Feng Xin noticed the change in hue of CuoCuo's ghostly skin, the misty; smokey grey skin of the dead slowly melting away to reveal a healthy pale chubby cheek, plump and unmistakable alive.

Feng Xin stared at the sight, unable to fully process what he was seeing and to test whether or not he was hallucinating, he lowered CuoCuo slowly away from the stream of light and CuoCuo entire face and form whitened back to its ghostly dull grey, the healthy glow of baby skin vanishing.

Then he raised CuoCuo back up so that the light bathed the baby. And that glowy hue had returned once again.

Feng Xin simply stared at the sight of his baby sporting that familiar illumination that bore onto his skin, the celestial stream of sunlight giving Feng Xin a rare glimpse into what could have been if CuoCuo had survived through his early days after birth. In that light, CuoCuo was not a ghost fetus enveloped in tendrils or smoke and resentful energy that entwined around the little child's limbs, but instead the sunlight gave CuoCuo the appearance of a healthy, bouncy baby; alive and breathing as he should have been.

Feng Xin stilled slowly. He was stunned and he didn't know what to do or say in this situation. He had never seen anything this emotionally profound before and he started to believe his heart wouldn't be able to take it as much as he thought. As he continued to look up at his son, he noticed the plumpness of CuoCuo's cheek that had been exposed to the light, and the chubby arm that was bathed in gold. On the same side of CuoCuo that was embraced by the sun, Feng Xin noticed tufts of auburn hair grinning from the scalp, soft and fluffy like any baby's hair would at CuoCuo's “age”.

Tears welled up in the Southern God's eyes, emotions taking over the rationality of his mind and he sat up abruptly, still holding CuoCuo and he cradled his son close, whispering into his head as the sun continued to light up the room in a warm gold hue.

“You would've had my hair colour if you had been given more time…maybe you would have grown up to be like your mother…or me….a little archer or a diplomatic or a merchant…” he rattled off all the ideas in his head of what his son could have been or grown into if he had survived infancy and that heavy weight in Feng Xin's heart grew even heavier, weighing like rocks in the cavities of his chest.

Feng Xin’s breath hitched as he tried to hold more tears back, to stop himself from crying but a few droplets fell free and rolled down his cheeks. He quietly sobbed into CuoCuo’s head, cradling the ghost baby close to his chest, his heartbeat quietly resonating with the ghost despite that fact that CuoCuo had no heartbeat and had never really been around another living being besides Feng Xin - CuoCuo's own mother was a ghost so a familiar warmth and heartbeat was lost on the baby.

CuoCuo must of sensed his father's anguish since he had started to quietly babble, reaching up to grab at the air, hoping to latch onto his divine father to try and comfort him but he missed so he attempted again and managed to grab hold of Feng Xin's casual robe he had been wearing with chubby mist-coloured fingers, his incoherent babbling and cries to try and make his father happy made Feng Xin chuckle a little through his tears.

“I'm sorry little one, I'm not upset at you….I'm upset at fate….you deserved better.” He stroked the back of CuoCuo's head gently, his own hand almost swamping his son's head in size and Feng Xin pressed a soft kiss to CuoCuo’s forehead, tears still rolling down his cheeks.

“I wish you survived your infancy….and I wish I had known about you long before….I would've fought for you and protected you in life…..I was a father without realising it and you were angry at being abandoned. You're not alone anymore my son. I'm here now. And there's a small group of ghosts and gods who deem you family too.”

CuoCuo babbled and giggled a little, brightening up and he snuggled into his father’s chest, prompting Feng Xin to let out a deep hearty laugh.

Feng Xin hadn't realised his little bonding moment had been witnessed by a certain God whom Feng Xin adored beyond his prince and son, someone who had been at odds with Feng Xin for centuries yet still loved him ever so dearly.

In the doorway to the chambers, a man with long ebony hair, cascading down his clothed back like silk had noticed this little moment and from his viewpoint, it looked like something bad had happened as he saw Feng Xin holding his ghost son in a way that made his heart clench, as a concerned dip etched his eyebrows and his cherry lips parted in astonishment. He rushed over to the father and son duo on the floor of the Nang Yang Palace and knelt beside Feng Xin.

“Feng Xin? What happened?”

Feng Xin looked up with blurry eyes and a tear-streaked face and he managed a wobbly smile in reply.

“Hi.” he whispered, having noticed that CuoCuo had fallen asleep in his arms. “My son is asleep.” he cooed.

“I can see that.” the other God huffed, but there was no indication or exasperation in his voice. Just pure adoration. ‘Oh so nothing bad had happened to CuoCuo then, that's good.’

“I mean what’s happened with you? You're crying.”

Feng Xin chuckled, realising what the other God meant. “Oh……I got emotional…..I'm fine.” he answered sheepishly, “I didn't mean to scare you Mu Qing.”

Mu Qing rolled his eyes but had a gentle and tender smile on his lips and he moved a little so that he was now on the floor too, scooting closer to Feng Xin and wrapping his arms around Feng Xin's waist.

“He's adorable.” Mu Qing cooed sweetly, gazing down at the now slumbering ghost baby in Feng Xin's arms, and the way CuoCuo's head rested on Feng Xin's broad chest.

Feng Xin gazed back at Mu Qing, who was still cooing at the ghost baby, and he couldn't resist smiling brightly despite his tear-streaked face.

“You're more adorable.” Feng Xin whispered, in a teasing manner, all shy yet earnest and Mu Qing flushed pink, becoming shy as well and hiding his face in Feng Xin's shoulder, almost mimicking CuoCuo in a way. Feng Xin planted a kiss on Mu Qing's head whilst lightly bouncing his son in his arms and he realised that CuoCuo was nearing his naptime.

“Ay, I’ve gotta get this one to his nursery for his nap, otherwise the ghost baby will be cranky and we both don’t want a cranky ghost in this palace.”

🌅

Feng Xin, with a more drier face than previously, exited CuoCuo's nursery, content with his son sleeping peacefully; or as peacefully as a ghost could sleep, and found Mu Qing standing nearby in looser, cherry red and black clothing, having shed his formal robes and armour to wear something more comfortable.

And he looked gorgeous in such casual attire. Relaxed and at ease. Especially with his hair fully down, side locks framing his lovely face and bringing out an air of comfortability he didn't usually show.

Feng Xin's heart sang in delight and he rushed over, barefoot and scooped Mu Qing up into his arms, holding him close to his body as it radiated heat. Mu Qing, who had become accustomed to Feng Xin's body heat over the years they had been together, snuggled up against him like a cat, wrapping his legs around Feng Xin's waist and purring.

“Mmm, I like it when you're warm.” Mu Qing rumbled affectionately and Feng Xin let out a deep chuckle, nuzzling Mu Qing.

“I like keeping you warm too.”

Mu Qing leaned back, taking in Feng Xin's face with loving eyes that glimmered with love and vulnerable emotion that he didn't usually share with anyone else and leaned forward to peck Feng Xin on the lips, chaste and innocent.

“How romantic.” He drawled, teasingly and kissed Feng Xin again, tasting his lips and letting his own linger for longer to savour the moment.

Feng Xin hummed through the kiss, drawing Mu Qing back in for more, tasting the cherry-sweetness of Mu Qing's lips as he did, gently biting that pink lower lip to elicit a mild reaction out of him.

Which worked.

Mu Qing purred and melted quietly in delight, eyelashes fluttering like butterfly wings as the kiss deepened, both gods melding together in their embrace. Mu Qing's finger absentmindedly carded through Feng Xin's auburn hair, loosening those strands until Feng Xin's bun had undone itself, auburn locks falling free from the restrains of that gold ribbon the martial God usually wore on a day to day basis.

They stayed like that for a while, whilst the sunlight streamed through the open windows, casting the hallway outside CuoCuo's nursery a warm golden glow, domestic and precious.

“Let's stay here for a bit, I wish to bask in the sun.” Mu Qing whispered.

Feng Xin hugged his husband closer in reply.

“I would like that.”

CuoCuo awoke to the sound of singing - soft and gentle - as the ghost's eyes fluttered open, blinking in confusion. As he woke up and registered his surroundings, he noticed that instead of his dad - his auburn haired, muscled dad with those broad shoulders he likes to rest his head on or that sharp jawline he likes to smack when he's excited - he saw someone else.

This someone else had darker hair and didn't wear heavy armour. He was singing to CuoCuo and the way this man was singing felt….familiar.

“Hello little one.” The man cooed, having stopped singing to say hello. CuoCuo's eyes widened in familiarity and he let out a happy squeal.

“Babuuu” he blabbered, reaching out for the familiar man. This man happened to be his other dad. He once helped his mother many years ago but he couldn't remember how long it had been….

Mu Qing watched over the ghost baby with a tender expression and reached down to wiggle his finger in front of CuoCuo, tickling him on the nose and making him laugh.

CuoCuo let out another squeal, kicking his chubby legs and reaching for Mu Qing.

Mu Qing let out a quiet chuckle and reached down to hook his hands underneath CuoCuo's arms and slowly lifted him up into the air before scooping him into his own arms and holding him close to his chest.

“Hello. Did you have a nice nap? Are you hungry?” Mu Qing cooed, shifting to move away from the cot and carried CuoCuo out of his nursery to the kitchen area of Nan Yang's divine palace, listening to the ghost’s noises as he tried to speak. Mu Qing engages in conversation with the ghost baby, despite CuoCuo’s lack of speech co-ordination, responding to CuoCuo's baby talk as if it was a real conversation, smiling softly.

As he strolled through the halls with CuoCuo snuggled in his arms, a junior official dressed in the uniform designated to those under General Nan Yang's command spotted the mighty Xuan Zhen and jogged up to him, bowing curtly and in respect.

“General Xuan Zhen, General Nan Yang have tasked me with feeding the young lord.”

Mu Qing blinked in confusion. ‘Young lord?’

“Are you referring to CuoCuo?” Mu Qing asked, pointing to the ghost as he sucked on a thick strand of Mu Qing's hair as if it was a sweet snack. The junior official glanced up briefly, caught CuoCuo's big eyes looking back at him and lowered his head hastily, fear punctuating his heart.

“Uh….yes. He is the General's son afterall.”

“Oh? Is it lunch time?” Mu Qing asked CuoCuo in a feminine voice, nuzzling his nose against CuoCuo's cheek. This gesture made him squeal quietly and he ended up dropping Mu Qing's hair, now excited over the prospect of being fed some warm food straight from his father’s kitchen.

Mu Qing glanced between the bowed official and the ghost baby and handed the ghost baby over to the junior official.

“As long as Feng Xin has given you instructions on how to feed CuoCuo, I trust you.”

CuoCuo sensed something was amiss as he came to realise that his other dad wouldn't be the one feeding him and he started making sad noises, his little arms outstretched as he tried to reach for Mu Qing. Mu Qing’s face became filled with sadness and he stepped towards the little ghost. “I'm sorry little one, I can't feed you today. I’ve got to check on your father and make sure he’s not overworking himself again. If you're good and you eat all of the congee, I’ll give you some snacks to munch on afterwards, okay?” Mu Qing tickled CuoCuo’s nose and it made the baby laugh a little, but those big eyes were still filled with a forlorn, longing expression.

The junior official bowed slightly and turned to walk away, carefully holding CuoCuo as he made stifled crying sounds, still trying to reach out to Mu Qing.

“I know, I’m sorry. Be a good boy CuoCuo, I'll see you later.” Mu Qing tried to cheer CuoCuo up with a goofy face and a wave but he didn't know if CuoCuo would be okay during feeding time.

🌅

Mu Qing found Feng Xin in his office, hunched over his desk with a pile of paper and an ink tray for company. He was scowling at something that looked to be bothering him and Mu Qing approached the desk with light footsteps and leaned over the desk, flipping his hair over his shoulder and biting his lip as he gazed at his husband working, pushing down the urge to lift up the area between his eyebrows to make that wrinkled crease disappear. He continued gazing at his husband, eyes glimmering in wonder as he watched Feng Xin scribble away, giggling softly under his breath as Feng Xin grunted and swore profanities about “stupid people asking for stupid things.”

“You're cute when you're concentrating on work and scowling.” Mu Qing purred, catching Feng Xin by surprise. Feng Xin looked up from his paper and locked eyes with Mu Qing.

“Oh, darling hi.” He spoke softly, as he didn't expect Mu Qing to not be in the same room as him.

“Is CuoCuo not with you?” He asked, perplexed by the absence of his little ghost.

Mu Qing shook his head.

“No, one of your junior officials came to me and told me that you sent them to collect CuoCuo for feeding time.” Mu Qing explained.

“Oh…I had forgotten about that. I take it CuoCuo wasn't 100% okay with being apart from you?”

Mu Qing shook his head. “No. He got a bit angsty but I promised I would give him some sweets as a treat if he ate his lunch.”

Mu Qing twirled his hair with his finger in a coy manner.

“You spoil him.” Feng Xin tutted in mock admonish, but there was humour in his voice.

“I do spoil him, General, I do. He deserves to be spoiled.” Mu Qing purred again. He leaned over the desk and peppered Feng Xin’s forehead with light kisses, giggling as he did so. Feng Xin instinctively leaned into the kisses being administered on his forehead and he broke into a small smile.

“You’re being quite affectionate today. What happened?” Feng Xin asked, curious about his husband’s behaviour. Mu Qing frowned and pulled back, a single slender eyebrow arched in perplexed confusion.

“Am I not allowed to be romantic and affectionate with my own spouse?”

“Of course you are. I’m just not used to you being so open with your affection. You're usually so shy and closed off most of the time. Especially when we first married. The consummation period after our wedding was…welll how do I put this?”

“Tense?”

“No, just quiet. Serene even. Being with you under those covers was not something I had been prepared for. You know I've only ever bedded one other person in my life but that was out of wedlock and that was how CuoCuo came into existence, so to actually consummate a union performed under the great laws of the heavens was…scarier than any battle I had ever been a participating fighter in..” Feng Xin wistfully replied.

“At least I finally got to see what the whole fuss was about regarding the legendary Ju Yang.” Mu Qing snickered, earning a light bat from his blushing husband,

“There’s nothing legendary about my pillar!” he almost shrieked in defense, which earned a jovial laugh from Mu Qing.

A wave of silence washed over them as Mu Qing calmed down from laughing and Feng Xin took a deep breath to help him settle after his outburst. They both sat with the stillness for a while, simply relaxed in its embrace, whilst Mu Qing turned and perched up onto the desk, a question forming on his tongue. His mind flashed back to earlier that day when Feng Xin had been crying and something heavy weighed in his chest as he thought about it.

In truth, Feng Xin had only vaguely spoken about him crying, having answered that he had been shaken by something emotional but what had caused the usually stoic and respectful General Nan Yang to actually cry?

“So,” Mu Qing began, formulating his question with uncertainty, testing the waters, “This may sound strange but why were you crying?” Mu Qing asked out of the blue.

Feng Xin flushed and scratched the back of his neck, “Oh…..it's kind of embarrassing….”

“I mean, you can tell me. I'm not going to laugh.” Mu Qing replied. He didn't want to press but Mu Qing was genuinely curious as to why his own husband had been crying. Feng Xin rarely cried, even openly, so it made Mu Qing both curious and worried.

“Uh, knowing you, you will.” Feng Xin tried to shut down the idea of him sharing his feelings and reasons for shedding tears. It was honestly embarrassing for him and that fact that Mu Qing had noticed earlier that he'd been crying made him want to dig a hole and hide away in it. Mu Qing didn't like that idea. He wouldn't laugh at his husband’s strong emotions. That was absurd.

“I won't.” He countered.

“You will Qing-er. I know you will.... I'm not supposed to be emotional… I'm supposed to be stoic and proud and strong anf godly...that's what I'm supposed to be....” Feng Xin shook his head, deflecting as he did. His eyes were puffy and a little red rimmed so to Mu Qing, it did seem he had been crying for some time before his arrival and the sight of his husband looking so forlorn and trying to back away from comfort and warmth made his heart flip and clench painfully. He didn't want Feng Xin to feel like he had to put up his walls to protect his feelings but he knew how hard-headed and stubborn the general could be.

Mu Qing didn't want to start an argument and he had no energy to butt heads with his stubborn spouse so he decided to proceed with a different approach.

“I won't. You can be vulnerable with me. We've been married for years now.”

“I know but it's a sensitive topic-” Feng Xin trailed off, voice quiet.

Mu Qing stared at Feng Xin for a moment, searching his face for an answer then realisation dawned on him. “It's about CuoCuo? Isn't it?”

A long, silent pause emanated between them, awkward and tense. Mu Qing watched Feng Xin shift, his eyebrows furrowing and nose scrunching up as he thought of a way to divert attention away from this conversation but nothing escaped Mu Qing's razor gaze.

“.....Yeah….uh….yeah….” Feng Xin answered in a small, awkward manner, hoping that answer would suffice and Mu Qing would drop the topic so he wouldn't have to talk about it - and by an extension his own fragile emotions. He had worn a mask of superiority and strength for so long that having raw, unfiltered, unchecked emotions felt foreign and…wrong.

Another long pause settled between them, as they held each other’s gaze

“I see….well if that's the case, then I won't do or say anything insensitive. I promise. I helped Jian Lan give birth to him and I've helped you raise him ever since he accepted fully as his father, so if anything, I will understand.”

“I know - it's just that I don't like being vulnerable-” Feng Xin trailed off again as he spoke, his voice small, vulnerable. He was scared.

“Neither do I. Yet, I'm open. You can tell me what's on your mind.” Mu Qing spoke, his tone gentle and kind. He didn't want Feng Xin to back away now, he needed his husband to open up like he once did.

Another pause sat between them as Feng Xin blinked back more tears, his words caught up his throat. He swallowed hard, hiccuping a little, shoulders slumped like a wounded puppy, face forlorn.

He took a shuddery breath, bracing himself as his hands shook from fear of resentment and before he could process his own words, he blurted them out, fast and unrelenting.

“IwasupsetatCuoCuo'sfatethathenevergottogrowuppastinfancyandhe'llnevertrulyknowwhatit'sliketobealivelikeus.”

Mu Qing blinked rapidly, trying to understand Feng Xin’s words but he had blurted everything out so fast all at once that Feng Xin’s sentences had blurred into one jumbled mess.

“Feng Xin…darling, you need to slow down. I couldn’t make out a single word you just said, it was all gibberish to me. Say it slower for me.”

Mu Qing spoke, his voice soothing and soft as he talked in order to calm Feng Xin down enough so he could speak his words properly.

“I was upset at CuoCuo's fate….that he never got to grow up past infancy and he'll never truly know what it's like to be….alive. Alive like us.” Feng Xin's lower lip wobbled at the word “us” and he hiccuped, still holding back his tears.

“Oh.” Mu Qing fell silent.

Another long pause fell between them, making the situation even more tense.

“Come here.” he softly said, gesturing for Feng Xin to move towards him. Feng Xin stared blankly at Mu Qing, befuddled and unblinking. He stayed seated in his desk chair, legs unable to propel him to move.

“What?” He asked.

“Come and hug me.” came Mu Qing’s answer who still had his arms out for a hug.

“Uhhhh….okay….I just don't want to squish you.” Feng Xin replied nervously, yet was itching to hug his husband, even subtly sliding his chair back to allow him room to move.

“I know you can control your strength so it's fine. Just come hug me. You need a hug.” Mu Qing had come closer to where Feng Xin was still seated and he wrapped his arms around Feng Xin’s larger frame and Feng Xin burst into tears and melted into Mu Qing's hug, crying into his shoulders, shuddering with his cries.

Mu Qing soothes Feng Xin with soft words as he rubs his husband's back. “A-Xin…it's okay. You can't blame yourself for what happened to CuoCuo, these things happen and there's not much we can do either as gods or mortals. You're doing really well as a father to a ghost baby and I'll be here to support you. It's what we promised when we got married.”

Feng Xin's only response was him crying more, yet they had been muffled as Feng Xin buried his head further into Mu Qing’s clothes, effectively inhaling Mu Qing’s scent to try and calm down. His breaths were shuddery and he hiccuped multiple times, eyes red and throat raw from crying loudly.

Mu Qing didn't say much, in case he spoke impolitely or said something that could be interpreted as an insult, and opted to simply hold his beloved spouse in his arms, quietly humming a lullaby to soothe him and hoped that Feng Xin’s cries would cease.

Then they could talk some more and hope that Feng Xin felt better.

Feng Xin lifted his head off of Mu Qing’s shoulder, his eyes rimmed with red from his tears, and he slowly stood to stand from his desk chair, moving his whole body a little bit backwards so that he was now facing Mu Qing. His lower lip wobbled as he pouted in an innocently petulant manner which made Mu wing laugh.

“You look so puppy-like A-Xin.” he reached up to touch Feng Xin’s cheek, his thumb caressing the skin there so tenderly. “You're my puppy.” he cooed, his lips curling into a funny smirk. His eyes resembled that of a mischievous cat and that too made Feng Xin laugh.

“Thank you.” Feng Xin said, his voice quiet, vulnerable.

Mu Qing looked confused. “For what?”

“For listening to me. And for not laughing at me or judging me for being emotional.” Feng Xin responded. Mu Qing’s eyes grew dark with sadness.

“A-Xin, I know I've been crude and sarcastic in the past and we’ve always argued endlessly due to our stubbornness, but I loathe to make you even more upset by judging you. I know it's not easy being so open but I’m proud of you for admitting your fears. I just don't like seeing you cry.”

Feng Xin’s eyes glimmered with a light, his spirits lifted a little bit more and he gazed down at his husband, love fluttering in his heart.

“I love you.” he whispered and he leaned down just enough so his lips hovered above Mu Qing's.

Their lips locked together in a tender motion, fuelled only by their love for each other as Feng Xin held Mu Qing closer to his body, wrapping his strong arms around Mu Qing's slender waist, and Mu Qing slid his arms over Feng Xin's shoulders and around his neck, becoming lost in this precious feeling. They both stayed in each other's embrace for a while, enjoying the peacefulness CuoCuo’s post nap was bringing them whilst a disciple was feeding the ghost baby and keeping him company.

They continued their kiss for what seemed like an eternity, wrapped in each other as they kept their lips locked together in their loving kiss. Feng Xin couldn't help but let out a little moan as they both began to move, Mu Qing staggering a little backwards until his back hit the wall behind him and Feng Xin had effectively and accidentally kabedon’d his husband. They realised what had happened and they broke the kiss, cheeks flushed from embarrassment.

Silence hung between them on a thread, neither of them saying a word to address the situation.

Until they both started laughing.

“Well this is a bit unexpected….are you okay?” Feng Xin asked, laughing a little less to speak. Mu Qing nodded. “Yeah, I'm alright. Guess things got a bit heated….perhaps we should do this another time?” he suggested coolly.

Feng Xin’s face burned hot. “Oh- yeah actually this is a bad time…..um….I’lll go get CuoCuo from the disciple so he can play for a bit. He's probably starting to wonder where I am….” Feng Xin released his hold on his husband and scurried away, face red and hidden behind his hands and he charged away out of his office, leaving Mu Qing alone to contemplate and giggle to himself about the kiss. Kissing his husband had always had some profound effect on Mu Qing and it always made him feel giddy - like he was seventeen again with an innocent teenage crush.

These feelings he had always buried beneath his once thorny exterior; deep in his soft heart had resurfaced after many centuries of hiding them away behind a frosty, uncaring, sarcastic personality and he was thankful that someone as stubborn yet loyal and kind and loving as Feng Xin had nudged these feelings out of Mu Qing.

He placed two fingers in his lips, the lingering static energy from their kiss and he couldn't hold in his giggle as he leaned against the wall to steady himself. He didn't want to trip over his own feet if he broke into a silly little dance but he did anyway, making adorable noises as he danced around on his tip-toes, spinning around in an elegant yet fluid motion, his giggle ringing out quietly in the hallway. The sun’s rays shone onto his ebony hair as he spun around with giddy happiness, the light causing his hair to glow a natural lighter shade of black, silken strands of hair shining like gloss. He stopped dancing for a moment to look out of one of open windows and gazed up at the golden sun high in the sky, illuminating the many palaces, pavilions, streets and courtyards of the three layers of the Heavenly Realm, the gold roofing tiles of the palaces of Upper Heaven reflecting the gold rays of the sun’s light, the light hitting the marble walkways of the streets and warming the path whilst gods and officials mingled and idle watchers enjoying their day were basked in the sun’s blessing.

To Mu Qing., the sun represented Feng Xin - glorious, hot, comforting, blinding brilliant yet also scorching and suffocating in the right ways. He has spent the majority of his entire life; mortal and immortal, with the man and as frustrating as he could be, they had their connection. Most would automatically assume they hated each other due to the arguing, insults and the punches they would frequently throw at each other, yet since their schedules were so packed and they due to their respective Southern territories that had to oversee and maintain, that stress was reality dealt with with intense sparring matches and yelling. Their arguments were childish and petty but Mu Qing had learnt over the years to be less abrasive and cold, learning how to open up to Feng Xin and not hide his fragile heart behind thick vines of thorns. His love bloomed like a flower under those rays of sunlight and he was ever thankful for Feng Xin’s patience which he had developed over the many centuries as a god to help Mu Qing overcome his insecurities, which in turn allowed the God of the Southeast to better himself and be less gruff and impatient.

In hindsight, Feng Xin and Mu Qing were like the sun and moon, Feng Xin was obviously the sun - bright, brilliant and powerful, dressed in gold armour with auburn hair than shone like spun threads of gold when the light hit those strands at the right angle, his divine glow blessing his people and allowing the lands to grow and become fertile, to nurture life with the cradle in gold and to protect that beautiful, delicate flower like he had always done whether that flower was able to physically look after himself or not, whilst Mu Qing was the moon, cold and distant at first, yet still widely revered and worshipped by humans. He had a much more intense sense of pride and his blade shone like silver moonlight. He was always in darker robes and possessed long, silken hair of the darkest ebony as if his hair had been crafted from the endless night sky.

The sun was always loyal and deeply protective, blessing the lands and humans with his all encompassing warmth, while the moon only graced humans with its light if it felt humans deserved it, yet it was still loved and treasured, even if the moon never felt loved and treasured deep down since it was so far away.

The sun; Feng Xin, always made Mu Qing feel loved and appreciated, where those attempts were clumsy or or planned out in detail, Mu Qing has the Southern Sun’s eternal blessing of love and it made him feel giddy every time.

The couple had reunited outside the kitchen where CuoCuo had been with that junior official, now with his ghosty stomach full of congee, soup and his favourites sweets Mu Qing has snuck into his mouth whilst Feng Xin has spoken to the junior official, and they had taken CuoCuo back into Feng Xin's chamber and Feng Xin gently plopped his baby onto the silk-covered bed to let him crawl about freely whilst Mu Qing and Feng Xin both got onto the bed together to watch over the ghost baby to make sure he didn't tumble over the edge of the bed and bump his head - even though he was a ghost -

“You want to play for a bit?” Feng Xin asked his son, as the ghost baby babbled and reached out for Feng Xin's extended leg. The ghost managed to grab hold of Feng Xin's pants and he gurgled out a noise like a laugh and he smiled wide, toothless gums on show as he did.

Feng Xin knew what his son wanted so he jerked his legs away, catching CuoCuo by surprise and urged the ghost baby to crawl about again, moving his leg just enough everytime CuoCuo was near.

And that started a little game between father and son.

CuoCuo ended up crawling excitedly all over the bed, blabbering and giggling as he tried to chase his father’s leg, his efforts entertaining both his dads as they watched CuoCuo.

“You almost got me that time. You can do it.” Feng Xin encouraged, laughing whilst holding Mu Qing's hand, his thumb stroking Mu Qing's soft skin.

He leaned down to press a soft kiss to his husband’s hair, breathing in that sweet scent he had grown accustomed to over the many years.

“Your hair smells so good.” He whispered into the ebony locks, the scent of cherries tickling his nostrils. Mu Qing snorted.

“You sap. Of course my hair smells good, unlike some celestial oafs, I like having a pristine appearance, it helps with my overall appeal as a deity.”

“Mmm. No wonder you get angsty when a statue of yours isn't what you envisioned.” Feng Xin kissed Mu Qing's hair again.

“Obviously. I have standards. I was trained as the Prince's personal servant back then, his tastes and royal demeanour have rubbed off on me. And besides, I hate ugly statues, they are crude and rushed and have no place in my palace.”

“My beautiful Qing-er. You deserve many beautiful things in life.” Feng Xin simpered. Mu Qing purred, pressing his body into Feng Xin's like a cat. “I have you and CuoCuo. And also Xie Lian and his husband and their inner circle of friends….but that's beside my point.”

“Bab….baba…aaa…”

Feng Xin and Mu Qing's attention snapped immediately from each other to CuoCuo who had finally managed to grab Feng Xin's leg and was now calling out to them.

“Bab….ba..babaaa….fu….fufu…fuuu…” CuoCuo spoke again, his tongue and mouth forming semi-coherent words as he babbled.

Feng Xin’s eyes widened when he figured out what CuoCuo was trying to say and his lips parted to form an excited grin, cheeks pink and eyes sparkling. “Are you trying to say my name? Fufu? Are you trying to say fuqin? Is that who you’re calling for?” he reached over to pick CuoCuo up, before plopping him in his lap. CuoCuo was still trying his best to form at least one word as he grabbed at the air in front of Feng Xin’s face, making Feng Xin smile even more as he bounced his son with his hands.

“Fuuufuuuu…” CuoCuo cried out, reaching for Feng Xin. Feng Xin, in turn, sniffed and held CuoCuo close. “Yes my boy. That's me.”

Mu Qing came to realise at that specific moment that CuoCuo had said his first words and it was ‘dad, as in father.’ He didn't care much about which dad he was talking to, but he knew that Feng Xin was technically CuoCuo’s birth father so to him, it made sense for CuoCuo to call Feng Xin dad first.

Feng Xin turned to Mu Qing with CuoCuo still held close to his body with stars in his eyes. “He said baba and fufu. That means the both of us, Qing-er. Can you believe it?”

Mu Qing hadn't registered that. In the few seconds where CuoCuo had been calling out to Feng Xin and trying his best to speak, he hadn't realised that the word baba was directed at him.

Meaning that CuoCuo's first word was Baba. Not Fuqin.

“But…you’re his father. He’s your primary bloodline. I’m just the guy that married into the family…” Mu Qing countered, trying to deflect. He didn't deserve to be called dad by that sweet little ghost.

“You're still baba to him. You're his parent too. And he recognises you as that. You're just as important to CuoCuo as me.” Feng Xin reasoned, laying his chin atop CuoCuo's head, lips curling into a bright, sunshine grin. CuoCuo giggled and called out to Mu Qing,” Baba. Baba.” He reached out for Mu Qing, hands grabbing at the air. Mu Qing reached out and allowed CuoCuo to grab hold of his fingers, a small smile of genuine emotion spreading on his lips as he blinked away tears.

“I'm baba?” He asked. CuoCuo made another noise in response, as if he was saying ‘yes.’

Mu Qing let out a quiet sob, and leaned in to nuzzle CuoCuo. “Baba. I'm Baba.” He whispered as a few droplets of tears cascaded down his cheeks.

“Fufu…Baba…” CuoCuo giggled, his laughter a jovial melody and both gods peppered kisses onto the ghost's chubby face, listening to the way the baby squealed.

“Baaba.” He called out and Feng Xin blew a raspberry atop CuoCuo's head. “Fu…” he cried out with a grin.

“He likes that.” Mu Qing pointed out.

“Mn.” Feng Xin mumbled in response as he nuzzled his son before putting CuoCuo in Mu Qing's lap.

“Let baba cuddle you for a bit.” He cooed at his son and his husband almost started crying again.

“I'll take him for a walk later so you can have some peace and quiet after all of this excitement and emotion.” Feng Xin suggested.

Mu Qing did not seem to hear him as he was too busy playing with CuoCuo to have heard, but he absentmindedly nodded in reply, making Feng Xin chuckle deeply and he pressed a kiss to Mu Qing's temple, his lips lingering on his husband's soft, milky skin.

🌅

The Heavenly capital was abuzz with activity whilst Feng Xin strolled about, now adorning his customary armour and robes. Swaddled in a baby carrier wrapped across his broad, clothed chest was CuoCuo, bouncing around happily and waving at passersby, arms flapping like he was trying to fly.

Feng Xin strode around confidently, a serene expression on his exceptionally chisled, handsome face as he thought about his darling husband, who had been napping in his bed within the Palace of Nan Yang without a care in the world.

“Qing-er looked so cute, spread out like a cat.” Feng Xin thought to himself so suddenly, reminiscing about how his husband had plopped down for a nap, limbs splayed out to mimic the strange sleeping position of a cat that's comfortable enough to sleep like that.

Many gods, both martial and civil service; and those of royal background, noticed the mighty General and some snickered at the sight of a cloudy ghost baby strapped to his body like that. Even if Feng Xin did hear their mocking laughs and comments, he didn't pay much attention to them and continued his stroll, basking in the golden light of the sun.

CuoCuo squealed, catching Feng Xin off guard and he tickled his son. “What was that for? Did you see something?” He asked in a soft, fatherly tone.

CuoCuo made another attempt to point ahead of him as Feng Xin followed his hand, scanning the area until he saw a familiar white-robed person standing around.

“Oh. He’s back.” He muttered and he patted CuoCuo down. “Fufu’s going to teleport over there for faster movement. Hold on.” Feng Xin warned and in a flash of light, Feng Xin disappeared into the air, dashing forward at light speed until he reappeared behind the white robed figure.

Tai Zi Dianxia*.” He spoke cordially, voice deep with reverence and respect. CuoCuo babbled.

“Da…Xia.” CuoCuo spoke, his words broken but clear.

“Are you trying to say Dianxia?” Feng Xin cooed, having deduced what CuoCuo was trying to say. The figure titled Dianxia giggled a little, covering his mouth with his long sleeve in a playful, polite manner before bending down to CuoCuo's level.

“Hello CuoCuo.” The figure spoke, voice soft in greeting, “God-uncle Xie is here. Have you been good for your dads?” he cooed gently, his voice soft and light. CuoCuo babbled out something, arms outstretched in the hopes of grabbing Dianxia’s long brownish black hair. Several long strands of this silken cascade of beauty had slipped over the figure’s shoulder, creating a stark contrast between the vivid white of his plain taoist robes and his long dark hair. The figure reached out to caress CuoCuo’s cheek but had been aiming for his mouth instead, testing to see if CuoCuo truly recognised him and if he did, then CuoCuo was less likely to become skittish and bite him in defence.

Luckily, CuoCuo was a high level ghost so his senses were very strong meaning that the ghost simply grabbed the prince’s finger and shoved the finger in his mouth to suckle on it, ignoring his father’s choked, horrified gasp.

“Oh, you do recognise me? That's wonderful, I was only testing the waters to see if you still remember me. I haven't been back in the capital for a long while.” Dianxia spoke, his voice still soft.

Then Dianxia looked back up at Feng Xin.

“Feng Xin. How have you been?” he asked.

“I've been alright. You came back to the Capital then, how long are you staying here?” the general answered.

“The whole summer. I'll probably leave again near the end of the summer season before the Autumn Moon harvest back to Puqi Shrine but until then you're stuck with me.”

“I have no issue with that.” Feng Xin shrugged and cradled CuoCuo fondly. CuoCuo was still suckling on Dianxia’s finger whilst his dad spoke to him.

“I’m guessing you spent spring in the mortal realm then?”

“I did for a little bit, I was spending time with Ol’ Feng, the beggar I befriended, helping them settle into their new home. They moved to Puqi village after the winter months ceased and they asked me to help them settle in, so I did. It was wonderful to breathe in that fresh new air after living in Ghost City for the winter months.”

“Ah, yes I remember you have a schedule to help you figure out how long you would stay in each of your three homes. Although I may have forgotten the order…” Feng Xin trailed off, trying to remember the seasons in which Dianxia would stay in each location.

“Puqi Village throughout Spring and Autumn, Winter with San Lang in Ghost city where he spoils me rotten and treats me like a princess and the Palace of Xianle during the summer months so I can spend time with my friends here.”

Dianxia continued speaking, just as CuoCuo had allowed him to slip his finger away from his mouth, which was now covered in ghost baby saliva. Feng Xin noticed and fished out a handkerchief and handed it to the prince for him to wipe his finger whilst he talked.

“I know you get pretty busy during the summer months since you're the patron god of summer, especially in the Southeast where your worshippers hold that massive summer festival in your honour and they always try to rope Mu Qing’s followers into joining in which usually means both you and Mu Qing have your hands full during the summer. If you or Mu Qing get extra busy and there’s no one else reliable enough to take care of CuoCuo or your junior officials have their hands full, then call me through the spiritual communication array and I can take care of CuoCuo.”

“That’s very kind of you, Dianxia.” Feng Xin was genuinely taken back by the prince’s kindness but he knew that his prince had always been generous and kind towards everyone but his cousin who probably was still a brat and a nuisance towards all but that human child the green ghost goblin adopted by accident and General Tai Hua.

Feng Xin still wasn't sure if the Crown Prince of the Yong’an kingdom was aware that Night-Touring Green Lantern had spiritually and romantically attached himself to him in the same way Crimson Rain Sought Flower had tied the red string around Dianxia’s finger as a symbol of their love and marriage and in the same way Black Water Sinking Ships had over time attached themselves to the now mortal Wind Master back in their prime, not just through their shared yet swapped fates but though a genuine emotional connection.

But Feng Xin didn't want to dwell on that subject more than necessary so he decided to let the image of Mu Qing slip into his head and his face also changed expressions, now bearing sunshine-filled simpering, cheeks pink and eyes glazed over with sparkles.

Dianxia couldn't help but chuckle lightly at the sight of his former bodyguard acting like a boy with a crush, inwardly swearing that he saw puppy ears sprout from Feng Xin’s head and puppy tail wagging excitedly behind him.

“You truly do embody the personality of a golden retriever.” Dianxia teased and even looked down at CuoCuo who displayed a faint look of confusion on his adorable face.

“Fu…fufu.” he called out, pouting.

“Huh?” He looked down to where CuoCuo was and saw his little pout, his bottom lip jutting out in the cutest way possible and he melted again.

“My little one asked for me?” he cooed and he pinched CuoCuo’s cheeks gently, imagining them as mantou buns.

“Oh? So you finally remembered our existence then?” a mocking lilt alerted Feng Xin as he turned to see Mu Qing strut up beside him, a mischievous gleam present in his eyes. He was dressed in regal dark robes, the shimmery fabric of his outer layer catching the sunlight majestically as he swayed his hips slightly whilst the heels of his boots clacked on the marble pavings.

“Of course I remembered, you're one of my best friends Mu Qing.” Dianxia answered, knowing the reason behind Mu Qing’s sarcasm.

They were in public. Which meant they had to keep up appearances. And Feng Xin hated that.

He wanted nothing more than to scoop Mu Qing into his arms and kiss him in a fiery and passionate state in front of onlookers to stake his claim of the gorgeous General Xuan Zhen without a single care for his reputation in the heavenly realm. How come Dianxia got to feverishly kiss his powerful, enigmatic ghost husband on a daily basis, publicly and privately, whilst he was stuck pretending he and Mu Qing were merely rivals and close friends in public and married lovers in private?

It was simply unfair.

“How have you been Mu Qing? Any issues with your followers or your junior officials?” Dianxia asked in a more casual yet formal tone.

“I wasn't expecting you to show much interest in my work.” Mu Qing countered, voice lilted in a smooth honeyed tone that made Feng Xin’s shoulders visibly quake.

“I’m simply trying to make conversation…” Dianxia trailed off, feeling silly. He had a feeling Mu Qing had his reasons for being snarky.

“Hey.” Feng Xin leaned closer, hooking his index finger under Mu Qing’s chin and pulling his head towards him. “Be nice. You’ll scare him off and he’ll run away back to Ghost City and we’ll never see him again for years.” Feng Xin whispered, breath hot but voice serious. Mu Qing momentarily blushed at such a close proximity in a public space and he stepped back, coughing lightly.

“Sorry, post-nap conversations tend to make me cranky.” Mu Qing muttered, eyes downcast as he smoothed his robes down. Dianxia, understanding what had happened, nodded and laughed. “No, of course Mu Qing. I have missed you though. It's good to see you.”

The three of them, minus CuoCuo who had opted to watch quietly from his chest swaddle, conversed mildly, exchanging stories and tidbits of information and slipping into quiet fits of giggles later on when Mu Qing and Dianxia started gossiping about fellow gods, leaving Feng Xin sort of out of the loop since he didn't really do heavenly gossip that well.

“Pei Ming was an absolute flirt when Feng Xin went out drinking with him. Wouldn't stop using the craziest pick up lines on that man. It was only when Feng Xin flirted back in retaliation to stop him from speaking did Pei Ming have an epiphany.” Mu Qing snorted, his arm casually resting on Dianxia’s shoulder as he giggled about the drinking session Feng Xin once had with the Heavenly realm’s most famous womanizer.

“Oh, are you still able to attend our vow renewal ceremony next month?” Mu Qing’s question came out timid; bashful even. Dianxia smiled brightly, making him look like he was practically glowing. “Of course I am. I wouldn't miss it for the world. I was upset that I couldn't attend your wedding since I was still banished from the heavens but this is an opportunity of a lifetime.”

“You’re coming next month? Really? That's good to hear. I wasn't sure if you still wanted to attend despite us making and sending the invitation. The vow renewal ceremony is going to be a much smaller affair, but we are hosting it on our wedding anniversary - Feng Xin will get confused if we do it on another date.”

“That’s understandable.”

Feng Xin appeared behind Mu Qing and looped his larger hands around Mu Qing’s slender waist and brought him closer to his body, with CuoCuo giggling in excitement, eyes wide and sparkling as he saw his baba move into view. “Baba!” CuoCuo squealed. Dianxia’s eyes blew wide open in shock.

“Oh….he spoke….he actually spoke!?” Dianxia blinked rapidly, mouth hanging open.

Mu Qing nodded enthusiastically, his fingers sliding in between Feng Xin's whilst they swayed together, whilst Feng Xin was untying the swaddle and allowing CuoCuo to float free. The little ghost bobbed up and down in the air, arms flaying about to steady himself before he floated over Dianxia and grabbed hold onto his robes, climbing up the long skirts of Dianxia’s robes like he was a tree.

“He spoke his first words earlier actually.” Mu Qing beamed with pride and Feng Xin simply nodded in agreement.

“Oh? You said your first words? Ah! That's wonderful to hear.” Dianxia scooped CuoCuo up into his arms and the magical white silk that was usually wrapped around Dianxia’s wrist came to life, unfurling itself to play with the ghost baby.

“How long into my second banishment did you guys get married?” Dianxia asked, curious whilst he played with CuoCuo. Feng Xin slung the swaddle over his shoulder and he wrapped his other arm around Mu Qing in an embrace.

“Right here? In public? People will see. And talk.” Mu Qing whispered hastily, fear creeping into his voice.

“I don't care. You're my husband. The gods are gossip hounds as it is, let them talk. To answer your question Dianxia, it was about two-hundred and fifty years into your second banishment. We’ve been married now for five-hundred and twenty two years. It's been two years since that old white clothed ghost got banished anyway.” Feng Xin answered.

Dianxia’s face fell a little, thinking back to his second banishment. The one that lasted eight-hundred years. Perhaps if he had known how deeply his two best friends had truly felt towards each other at the time, he would've made it to see them exchange their vows.

“And this is exactly why we are doing the renewal ceremony. It's been over five-hundred years now, it's about time we had an update to our married lives.” Mu Qing smirked cheerfully, seeing Dianxia’s sadness and hoping to cheer him up.

“Do you want to see a preview?” Feng Xin asked, fiddling with Mu Qing’s luscious hair.. Dianxia lit up brightly. “Yes.”

Feng Xin tilted Mu Qing’s chin upwards and leaned in, locking lips with him in a single fluid motion. Mu Qing’s eyes fluttered close and he leaned into the kiss, savouring the moment. CuoCuo seemed to like the sight of his dads kissing and he made gurgling noises of happiness, waving. Dianxia held close in his arms, rocking him gently and making cute baby noises at him to stimulate and distract him so his dads could kiss in peace.

Mu Qing and Feng Xin parted slowly, their lips making a slight popping sound, their cheeks flushed pink and eyes glazed over with love. They took in each other’s appearances, Mu Qing biting his lip and Feng Xin leaning in for another kiss when a flirtatious voice interrupted them.

“Ho ho.”

Both Southern Gods turned and angrily yelled at the famously bulky and muscular god of the northern territories who had mysteriously appeared out of thin air.

“Fuck off Pei Guang! Go fanboy over Hualian instead of us!”

“Rude.” Came the deep rumbling voice of the Heavens’ famous womanizer and one of the oldest deities of the new age.

Dianxia awkwardly waved at the Martial God of the North and the publicly titled the God of Love, smiling in the same awkward manner to try and ease tensions. “Sorry General, San Lang isn't here at the moment, he still doesn't like the Heavenly realm that much, perhaps some other time? I can ask him to carve out a statue of us two and put it in your palace’s gardens for your viewing pleasure?.”

“That’s alright Tai Zi Dianxia*, I'll come back when these two hot heads have calmed down.” he pointed to the Southern Gods with a sly smirk and strolled away whistling a tune.

Mu Qing scoffed. “Do we have to let him into the marriage pavilion?”

“Yes. He said he would bless our vow renewal when I initially asked him to attend.” Feng Xin sighed in resignation, annoyed that the romantic mood had been broken.

“It could be worse guys, it could have been Qianqiu who saw you two kissing and made a big fuss about it.” Dianxia gently suggested and the two other Xianle natives groaned in agreement, knowing how naive the Martial God of the East sometimes was.

🌅

One month later

The marriage pavilion was packed with guests, both gods and several ghosts, all dressed in lavish robes to fit the occasion. Those invited by the Gods of the Southwest and Southeast had been ushered inside to their arranged seats before the ceremony began and CuoCuo was happily sat snug on Dianxia’s lap, tapping and patting E-Ming and playing with the white silk ribbon, Ruoye, as it snuck out from inside Dianxia’s long sleeves.

“Well, this is a pleasant sight. Quite the turnout for a vow renewal ceremony. He Xuan half thought it was an actual wedding.” Dianxia’s husband, who sat beside him, slyly remarked, arms crossed over his broad chest. Dianxia playfully swatted him. “Don’t be a tease. It’s like a wedding. Let's just say that Xin-er and A-Qing are getting married again. They made an update to their vows. And somehow, Jian Lan is also here. I heard her talking to someone, probably Lady Rain Master.”

“I think she bribed her way into the pavilion.” The crimson robed ghost king replied. Dianxia simply shook his head, resigning himself to that reality. CuoCuo hadn't sensed his mother’s presence at all as he was too busy playing with Ruoye to notice.

The melody of a guqin alerted the guests that the Southern Gods had arrived and even He Xuan in his startled moment, dropped his bowl of noodles onto his lap and he let out a snarl of disappointment and annoyance. “And there goes my lunch, right on my lap. And these were my good robes too.” he muttered. “Just change your robes quickly before Gege’s servants appear.” the Crimson Rain Sought Flower leaned back and whispered since He Xuan was sitting behind him.

“Yeah sure, good idea.” He Xuan rolled his eyes but took the advice and snapped his fingers to reveal seafoam green and black robes underneath now ruined other clothes had been wearing.

Mu Qing and Feng Xin appeared in the doorway of the pavilion and started walking down the middle of the aisle, accompanied by a small orchestra of musicians. CuoCuo had stopped playing with Ruoye and saw his dads both dressed in lavish red and golds, his eyes blowing wide in wonder and he made an excited noise of appreciation.

“Fufu.” he called out, and Feng Xin glanced over, seeing his little smokey ghost son waving at him with the biggest grin on his face. Feng Xin grinned back and Dianxia thought to himself briefly in that spilt second exchange:

‘Like father, like son.

The Southern Gods got the wedding altar and the ceremony commenced, allowing them to exchange their newly updated vows with soft reverences and teary eyes.

Once Feng Xin had spoken his side of the new vows to Mu Qing, they proceeded with their bows - the first to closest family: which happened to be Dianxia, Hua Chengzhu, the green goblin who had been invited and little CuoCuo; one bow to the heavens (in this case it was a giant tapestry of the new Heavenly Emperor wearing exquisitive gold and white robes, long hair adorned in golden flower hairpins holding a red flower one hand and a slender silver bladed sword in the other) and the final bow to each other before they shared a tender and romantic kiss in front of the onlookers, much to the applause of their guests. Even Jian Lan cried, wailing quietly at the very back of the pavilion from where she slipped in.

CuoCuo cheered in his own way, his squeals and laughter loud and joyous before his Fuqin appeared in a flurry or red and gold to hoist him to arms and give him a kiss on the forehead. “You were such a good boy. Well done for sitting still for that long. I’ll get you some sweets and we can say hi to your mama if you want.” Feng Xin bounced his son in his arms and Mu Qing glided over to say hello, only to be swept into a hug by a now crying Dianxia.

“I’m so happy for you.” he let out a wail and buried his face in Mu Qing’s robe, much to his mild embarrassment.

“Thank you Dianxia…no, Xie Lian.” Mu Qing softly replied. He locked eyes with Hua Chengzhu who nodded and let a small smile grace his impossibly handsome, humane features. Mu Qing’s eyes left Hua Chengzhu and found Feng Xin who gave him a toothy grin. Mu Qing stepped away from Xie Lian's hug and was embraced by his husband.

“I love you Qing-er. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me.” Feng Xin simpered and Mu Qing’s cheeks turned red, before he gawfuffed and snorted.Feng Xin let him laugh fir a moment before Mu Qing sighed and calmed his racing heart, a soft, equally simpering smile graced his cherry lips.

“I love you too, A-Xin.” he whispered in reply, leaning to press his forehead against Feng Xin's.

And his words rang true.
