Hi there! No need to feel stupid - I'm pretty sure you've run into one of our common snags :D You're right that it's not obvious!
Did you receive your code directly from another user? If so, then they need to give you the invitation link, not just the raw text invitation code. A few people have run into this problem - we just posted a new post to help clear things up. I'm going to quote the relevant part so you know what to ask your invitation gifter to do!
If you are an existing user of the Archive and you'd like to give a code to a friend, then you need to give them an invitation link, not just the raw code. You can choose to send them an email via 'Invitations' on your user home, and this will happen automatically. If you want to share a code without sending an email, then go to 'Manage invitations' and you'll see an option to 'Copy and use' your existing codes. Click on this to copy the invitations link - it's this that you need to share with people.
So, I'm afraid you'll need to go back to the person who gifted you your code and ask them to do the above. Sorry for the confusion - this was totally not you!
