Summary
The world is cold. Chaotic, erratic and absurd and indifferent to the struggles of the ants living within. Both of them learned this a long time ago. But where one fell to resignation and ennui in the face of the endless uncaring void, the other screamed “NO” and carved a bloody swath into the world in an attempt to create their own world of beautiful, elegant order and efficiency. It was admirable, in spite of all the deaths.
“I wish I was more like him”. The nobody wished. And so they dreamed.
They dreamed of the empty room. Of the genius of flesh and steel, of odd eyes, with mechanical hands and leering grin. Of cable and wires digging into soft flesh and brittle bone. Of wistfulness and desire to be something more. And when they inevitably woke up, it would be a half-forgotten memory.
But it's not, and now they're stuck with the metaphorical chains of two incongruent persons being as one, and their own looming death.
