Cecil nodded slowly. “We can help you,” he said. “We’ve got people. Facilities. Programs. We can offer training. A way to help you understand your powers — all of them. Maybe even push past the artificial limits Brandyworth coded in. Right now, you can only manipulate non-sentient matter. But with time… with focus… you might be able to do more.”
He stepped closer, voice lower. “You could affect anything. Anyone.”
She tilted her head at that, curiosity flickering behind her exhausted eyes. “So I’d be invincible?”
“Maybe,” Cecil said with a small shrug. “But only if you want to be.”

“They weren’t… perfect. Adam didn’t believe in me half the time. Betsy always looked like she was trying to remember the script to ‘how to be a mom.’” She let out a shaky breath. “But they tried.”

Mark leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms. “That’s Paul and Kate— The Cha twins. They’ve been in GDA custody since before I got here. Years.”
Eve raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never seen them before.”
“They’re kept in a separate wing most of the time,” Mark said. “More… secure. From what I’ve heard, they both have the power to clone themselves by some ancient curse in their bloodline. This makes them hard to track. Even harder to contain. Kate’s supposedly mastered her control. Paul…” He glanced down the hallway again. “Not so much.”

“I missed all of this,” Mark admitted, eyes still on the horizon. “Missed you. But I had to leave. After what my dad did… after he killed my mom… I just… I had to become someone who could stop him. Someone strong enough to make sure that never happens to anyone else.”
His voice lowered. “If he comes back, I have to be ready. I will be ready.”
Amber reached over and took his hand, gently but with that same fire he remembered. “You will be. You’re already stronger than you think.”
