He was sorry. Sorry that it had to end like this. Sorry he couldn't be the bigger man and forgive Barnes. Sorry he had driven all his friend away. Sorry that he wasn't strong enough. Sorry that he was just a man, playing at being a hero while the real heroes were forced to work around him.
Sorry that there are always casualties in war.

This is how people fall. Walking, one step in front of the other. All it really takes is a shift in the ground, a rock suddenly falling away, the buckling of an ankle and suddenly we are in free fall. The landing is going to hurt and we try to protect ourselves as best we can before the inevitable crash.

As heir to the throne of Wakanda, T'Challa had been to many funerals in his lifetime, from the funerals of officials to his father to those of elders of the various Wakandan tribes. Some of those funerals had been joyful. A celebration of a life. Others had been full of wailing and tears as the various family and friends refused to accept the inevitability of death. None of them had been like Stark's.

Summary
I suppose you think it's funny that I chose to use a letter as my reply to your little peace offering. Tony Stark, man of the future, choosing this obsolete method to communicate when he has the world at his fingertips. I guess it is kind of odd, but the good thing about letters is they hide a lot of emotion.
After Tony's funeral, Steve receives a reply to his letter.

Summary
It should have been a miserable day. If there was any fairness in the world, the sky should have been grey, rain pouring from the clouds like the world was crying. Thunder and lightning should have lit up the sky like Thor himself was screaming at the injustice. Instead it was a sunny day. Warm but with a cool breeze blowing, the sky a deep blue.
The sad fact was, the world doesn't stop moving just because one of its best is gone.

Steve had been afraid his whole life. Afraid of being too small to be of use. Afraid when his best friend had been sent off to war and he couldn’t follow. Afraid of the experiment he had committed himself too, just so he could be allowed to fight. Afraid when he heard about the loss of the 107th. Afraid for all the people he was leaving behind when he brought the plane down. He had been afraid when he had woken up from the ice, of this new world he had found himself in. He had been afraid of telling Tony the truth about his parents and ruining their relationship.
Fear was not weakness. That didn’t mean it couldn’t destroy everything.

Reaching over, Rhodey grabbed a small box that Pepper had placed on the table before the meeting. Opening the box, he quickly placed the pens in the middle of the table where the former heroes could reach. The pens were beautiful, old fashioned fountain pens. Rhodey had found them in Tony’s workshop when he had gone down there with Vision to start cleaning it out after the funeral. It seemed fitting that they should be brought to this meeting.
Rogers seemed to freeze over at the sight of them, blue eyes suddenly damp as if the man was holding back tears.

As Steve had suspected, Ross had never found the HYDRA base. The dead Winter Solders were still where they had been left, frozen guardians of a grim scene. There was dry blood covering the floor, Steve unable to distinguish between Bucky's, Tony's and his own as he relived the scene inside his head.
But that wasn't what Steve was looking for. Buried in the ice by one of the walls, in the exact place where Tony had lay helpless against Steve's attack, was a twisted piece of red and gold metal.
