Summary
They sat in silence for a few seconds and watched the surf rolling in and out, in and out. Shane eased one knee up, resting his arm across it, watching Ilya out of the corner of his eye with infinite patience.
“You wanna talk about it?” he asked, voice soft enough that the wind almost stole it.
He did want to talk. His chest was full of words. Too full. But the idea of opening all that up? Of watching Shane recoil, or worse, watching him care? It was unbearable. The thought of being comforted by Shane, of feeling that warmth and knowing he couldn’t keep it, nearly crushed him.
Ilya kept his eyes on the water, jaw tight.
Shane reached out slowly and carefully and let the tip of one finger trace the outside of Ilya’s forearm. Just a whisper of contact. A question, not a demand.
Ilya looked at him. Shane gave a small tilt of his hand, beckoning him closer.
“Come here.”

A deviation from the All-Star weekend in Tampa:
Instead of finding Shane on the bench, it’s Ilya alone with his ghosts and falling apart in ways he never lets anyone see.
Until Shane sits beside him.
The tide is ceaseless and the night is heavy. Canon diverges; feelings don't.

Summary
“Ah,” Ilya said, grinning, going for the joke.
Shane looked up, curious.
“So being boring is genetic?”
He expected laughter. Or the way Shane would roll his eyes even as he melted, the way that made the teasing feel welcome.
Instead, Shane’s smile disappeared completely. It wasn’t dramatic. It just… went. Like a light switched off.
“Yeah,” Shane said, clearing his throat, forcing the word out before it could crack. “I guess so.”
He took a step back, creating space that felt suddenly necessary, like he might suffocate if he drifted any closer. Every instinct in him screamed to leave. To put distance between himself and this feeling and the source of it before it swallowed him whole

Summary
“Look, I know I’m boring. And lame and… weird. I just… can you not say it? Every time? Or at least not every ten seconds.”
And suddenly Ilya saw the way Shane was trying to fold in on himself. Like he wanted to hide the parts of his life he had just let Ilya see. Now it looked like he regretted letting Ilya in. Or he expected him to laugh. Or leave.
He crossed the room.
“Shane.”
Shane shook his head once.
“I’m sorry. Forget it.”
“No,” Ilya said gently, crouching in front of him. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I was teasing. I didn’t realize.” He paused, then said more firmly, “you’re not boring.”
Shane scoffed under his breath.
“I mean it,” Ilya said, ducking his head to try to catch his eye. “You’re the most specific person I’ve ever met. It’s fascinating. I love the way your brain works. And the way this house feels like you.”

Summary
“You know, I could marry Svetlana,” Ilya said, apropos of nothing.
Shane looked up from his phone, frowning.
“To get an American passport,” Ilya went on, casual as anything, like they were talking about travel plans or a trade rumor. Not Shane’s worst nightmare. “It would be like a business agreement. She would do it.”
“Okay,” Shane said slowly, already hearing the faint crack in his voice. “Sure. A business agreement. But…It’s not like you could just fake it. You’d have to live with her. She would get to come home to you.”
“Yes, but it would be like roommates,” Ilya said. “We could still be this-” he gestured loosely between them, like that explained everything. “She wouldn’t mind.”
“She’d be your wife, Ilya.”
The word was like a lash, even to his own ears.

What if the "I could marry Svetlana" scene and Ilya being LOST in the sauce sex scene had a baby? And that baby was angst + comfort + shower sex?

Summary
“Did J.J. try to set you up with that guy?” Hayden asked.
Shane nodded, then frowned. "Why didn't you, like, discourage him?"
"That dude sounded perfect for you.” Hayden immediately held his hands up as outrage flashed across Shane’s features. “What? I just think you can do better!”
Shane’s mouth dropped open.
“For fuck’s sake, Hayden.”
Hayden laughed as he crossed the room and dropped down onto the bench beside him, nudging Shane’s arm with his elbow.
“I’m kidding. Mostly. Besides-”
Shane closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“It’s not funny.”
“Hey,” Hayden said in a conciliatory tone, though there was no real apology in it. “Look. I fucking hate the guy, but if he’s what you want…”
The words chafed. It felt wrong, all wrong, like someone humoring a bad decision. Like of course Shane could do better, should want better. Like it was obvious.
Shane saw red.

Summary
“The twins are having some big feelings about being disappointed,” Jackie explained. “We tried to get tickets for Taylor Swift in Toronto next year. But Ticketmaster was… Ticketmaster.”
“Ah,” Shane said, wincing in immediate sympathy. “Bummer. Aren’t there resale ones, though?”
Hayden dropped onto the opposite end of the sectional with a beer in hand and snorted.
“Yeah, for like, the price of a small car. I am not paying that much for a concert.”“Why not?” Ilya drawled, turning his head toward Hayden. “You do not have money for resale?”
Hayden didn’t even look at him. “I have money. I just also have sense.”
“Ah.” Ilya nodded thoughtfully. “So Montreal paid you so little you must budget carefully. Makes sense. Fifteenth best player on team, yes?”
“Hey,” Shane said. “Maybe don’t start a fist fight in our living room.”
Ilya looked up at him, entirely unrepentant.
“I am helping,” he said. “He says he cannot afford tickets. I am investigating.”
Hayden scoffed. “You wanna help? You buy them, then.”
“Okay.” Ilya reached for his phone. “Done."
