During one Mission of intercepting a piece of Eden, the plan went horribly wrong with the Artefact overloaded with some sort of energy before exploding catching anyone that was in the basement where it was studied by the Templar order, in its blast which unfortunately included Thomas himself.
Though it did not kill him, no, As he awoke in a forest, filled with life, it looked normal until he looked up in the sky and saw that shattered moon

And many of them are less than pleased.

Gu(蛊): strange shapeshifting creatures associated with black magic in Chinese mythology. They are a venom-based poison associated with cultures of south China, particularly Nanyue. The traditional preparation of gu poison involved sealing several venomous creatures (e.g., centipede, snake, scorpion) inside a closed container, where they devoured one another and allegedly concentrated their toxins into a single survivor, whose body would be fed upon by larvae until consumed. The last surviving larva held the complex poison.Knowledge of reverend insanity is not required!
