Summary

it wasn’t even close to this hot during their first summer, and still they were at the creek every other day. nat would roll the legs of her overalls up past her knees and net fish among the rocks while lotte watched, bemused, in her fluttery sundresses and tiny shorts. the honeysuckle bushes were so tall and so thick that they masked the stench of what could only be described as dead heat, and they bloomed so big and so sweet. sometimes they didn’t even have to make sandwiches for lunch, but could instead kneel in the grass in front of the huckleberry vines and eat until their fingers bled fuschia. natalie always remembers these as beautiful days, where lottie was sunkissed and healthy, her hair thick and long, her head clear.
