There was a change in the air, Caitlyn could feel it.
The person staring back at her was not the same as the girl from only a few seconds ago. Her shoulders seemed to pull upwards as if slowly tugged by marionette strings. Fingers previously curled loosely in her palms, peeled outward, the knuckles becoming white with how stiff and straight her fingers became. The soft way her blue eyes fidgeted not a moment ago hardened and glinted, before seeming to glaze over in a mask that poorly mimicked the expression from before.
Vi couldn’t see it through her tears; the vision she had in her mind of her small sister changed into that of a young woman. She wouldn’t notice the small subtle shifts. Curling in Caitlyn’s gut worsened as the blue eyes slid away from her own and back to Vi’s face. The way she gazed upon Vi was different than a moment ago. Hope and almost unconditional love changed to one of thinly veiled resentment and disdain.
Powder, the baby sister Vi spoke about it in soft terms when bleeding out. Powder, the name listed on the walls of the run-down house. Powder, one of the only words mentioned in Vi’s almost empty criminal report.
This was not Powder.

Summary
For hundreds of years, the Cloud Recesses Marine Rehabilitation Center has protected the deepest, darkest secrets of the oceans and its inhabitants. It aids them when they are sick, injured, or in need of a re-homing.
The CRMRC isn't a stranger to dangerous marine predators. It has housed everything from the nearly extinct Great Shark Jiaoren to a simple jellyfish.
It hasn't prepared them for the arrival of an elusive Deep-Sea Jiaoren--a creature of legends.
Once the Jiaoren’s black tail touches the sunlight, it burns with an under-layer of red. It gleams like a warning, like hidden rubies buried in the blackened scales. With each movement, the colors ripple like ombre. The tail is long and slim, sharpened black-ombre scales and spindly fins. It’s the longest tail Lan Wangji has ever seen. The caudal fin is long and with low drag, the epitome of a predator designed to hunt.
Blood smears across its pale skin, irritated gills cutting along the sides of its ribcage. Those silvery-blue eyes are slitted pinpricks, teeth sharp and webbed hands bloody as it pulls itself across the dock with a powerful slap of its tail.
A Deep-Sea Jiaoren.

Conventional wisdom would have one think that a lifetime of cultivation and night hunts would have prepared Lan Wangji for such a scene. Had it been a malevolent entity, an out of place ghost or demon, or even a mischievous but ultimately harmless spirit, they would be right. However if Lan Wangji was correct, and he very much suspected he was, the entity in front of him exceeded what could be classified as spiritual or supernatural and landed squarely into mythical and fantastical.
