Summary
Zuko isn’t sent to capture the Avatar after his Agni Kai. Instead, his banishment is permanent. No exceptions. No opportunity to regain his honor. He’s unceremoniously dumped in the Earth Kingdom and left with nothing but a debilitating scar and an uncle who still claims he cares.
An assassination attempt quickly proves that his father isn’t satisfied with just exiling him. He and Iroh decide to hide out in the remote town of Gaoling, one of the few places overlooked by the Fire Nation due to its strategic unimportance.
Zuko’s pretty sure the Spirits hate him. Well, that’s fine. He hates them too.

I’m up against the wall, two feet from a broken elevator and one foot from a complete stranger, when I realize I’m down to two cigarettes.
He’s shifting from foot to foot, eyes flitting around nervously. Maybe the guy should loosen his damned fancy tie a bit, let some air in. Maybe that’d do his anxiety some good.
Still, it’s great to see another human being—one who isn’t actively trying to kill me. I trust this guy as far as I can throw him, don’t get me wrong, but after all the shit I’ve been through today, maybe I shouldn’t measure by my throwing strength.
But I’m down to two cigarettes, anyhow, and this guy’s got nerves up the wazoo and out the ears.
Call it an olive branch.

Illuga frowns. “I don’t have any scars from the Hunter now, if that’s what you mean,” he says. “It’s as if I’d never been attacked in the first place.”
Aether’s hand hesitantly lands on Illuga’s shoulder. “I didn’t want to stress you out more until we could talk to Columbina, but now that we’re here, you should probably look at your reflection,” he says quietly, carefully.
His body stiffens in an instant, and that feeling of ,wrong, wrong, wrong hits him again full force. He steps out from under Aether’s touch and staggers on autopilot toward the closest pool of water. Illuga crouches down at the edge, pushing his fingers into his hair for some sort of grounding as he leans forward, lantern knocking against his thigh. He catches sight of his reflection, and his world tilts on its axis.
Illuga comes back from the dead less human and more fae than before.

Also, his tolerance. Whenever I visit him— which I do quite often, he offers me a bucket or two of water while he insists on sipping his fire water. Surely after some time, that has to be deadly? I don't think I've seen him eat much, either. He brings and offers to cook dinner for the both of us sometimes, but he insists that I eat it all. No matter how much I try to force the issue, he doesn't budge.
I tried asking my pops but he brushed it off quickly, but I could tell he was hiding something. Again, I’m not accusing my friend of anything egregious of any sorts. I’d just like to know what kind of entity I’m potentially dealing with.
