I finished this last night at around 3AM (this morning?) and am now in the middle of a skim/re-read. The author was right—this really is a fic made for rereading, because not even 20 chapters in and almost every couple paragraphs there is some line with a double meaning or seemingly harmless description that is actually intense foreshadowing and it’s just. Incredible.
I haven’t read many eldritch horror things, in fact I think the closest I have is probably some fics in the Persona 5 fandom (or the couple short horror stories I’ve read), but I am a bit familiar with the tropes. the horrors being trapped, somehow, humanity being super insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and the almost required Bad End. So the ending wasn’t too much of a surprise to me, since it was quite evident that Kirigiri was Not going to be able to beat her preprogramming, but it was still sad, I think. I think that the way that these sorts of endings still work despite their predictability is that the reader has to feel for the characters, nonetheless. Even if the reader knew that a Bad End was inevitable, even if the reader knew from just one quarter of the story in that the main characters were never going to be able to beat these otherwordly forces, a “good” ending in this case is one that I think still depresses the reader, that taps into something more personal than just a generic horror story and *sticks* with them even after the last word is read and the last body drops. And I know a lot of “final” choices in the end of such stories has something to do with the character choosing between “freedom” or “happiness,” and such variations of the sort, but still—the revelation that Kirigiri has at the end, that she doesn’t care about how her life is lived anymore since she has the knowledge that Naegi *did* truly love her—I liked it.
Now, thinking back on it, it may have come as a bit of a surprise. Because even throughout this fic, I hadn’t ever really gotten that “obsessive” love sort of vibe from Kirigiri. But then again, this want for Naegi’s love for her might also be something hardwired into her very existence, so much so that there’s no need for dramatic outward displays, which makes it even more sad, I think. My obvious adoring of unrealistic depths of love also contributes strongly to my liking of this ending.
I guess a discussion to be had is whether or not, in her final moments, the choice Kirigiri made was her own, to any extent. I think it is implied to be, since Nagito was prepared to accept her decision to die, but in the end I cannot help but think—I’m not sure. I read through all of the comments on the last chapter, wanting to see any questions that were answered, and one commentator brought up a really intruiging point. Did Kirigiri have anything *true* of herself that Naegi loved? Or was the “Kirigiri” that he loved entirely manufactured in order to derive that sort of devotion from him? The answer to this would also be the answer to my original discussion point, but I suppose the final results of their story make all this a moot point. I think we can conclude that neither Naegi nor Kirigiri have a happy ending, and that in the end, their will was never their own. There are too many factors convoluting any sort of freedom they may have believed they had. In Kirigiri’s case, any moment of lucidity she had was because Komaeda was allowing it, in a sense. In Naegi’s case, perhaps his thoughts may have been his own, but his entire existence was part of something much greater, and who’s to say that eldritch DNA won’t mess with your inner workings as well?
Lots to think on. In a sense, this ending has a lot in common with the actualization / cognitive horror popular in Persona 5 fics, which I find really interesting. One is entirely within the mind, while the other is about literal monsters, and yet they all boil down to the simple question of: is your will really your own? Can you attribute *anything* of yourself to your*self* if yours is an existence maintained through someone else’s whims? And, most importantly—does it *matter*?
Only if you allow it to, I suppose. And in this instance, Kirigiri decided that it *didn’t.*
A thoroughly compelling story could be written from so many characters’ perspectives. Shuichi’s initial investigation, a story that would end with a note of dread when he hears about Kirigiri’s case. Naegi’s perspective, which would no doubt be just as disturbing. Chiaki’s attempts to find her friend, Hajime, only to realize that she’s stumbled across something far beyond her abilities (and the story would end with her realizing her inevitable death is one of convenience, and Izuru looking down at her compassionlessly).
And the fact that the entire story is told by an unreliable narrator. Gosh, I love it. Love it. The contrast between the mood of the first chapter and the last is insane, it’s just breathtaking, wow.

“Motorin’,” Kazuichi croons to the timing belt. His fingers drum along while he runs through the checklist for stripped parts.
It’s cool, the whole rock scene? He’d tried guitar once, with the pink hair and the- everything- but it hadn’t stuck. None of it had, Kazuichi knows he’s still the same saggy loser, all paper doll dressed in cool people clothes. And then, get this, Hinata lets it slip that they’re not all that cool, after all. He’s just kind of flashy. Dumb looking. Fake. Maybe they could be, on someone cool. Like a coolness paradox.
But the music is cool, and Kazuichi feels kind of cool too. By the end of the week, he knows the tapes front to back. His wrench taps along, he mouths the words. He forgets, for a minute, about the ruined wreck of an island they’re trying to reclaim.
The island, though, it doesn’t exactly forget about him.

I dunno why this one hit me so hard. but a friendship i have latched onto surprisingly from dr2 is soda and ibuki. i dunno, maybe it’s cause of their bright aesthetics, but maybe it’s the idea of a loser/punk rock pairing, but their friendship as expressed in similar fanfics never fails to make me happy. especially when it’s coupled with the classic post-canon group healing kinda premise. the notion of someone like ibuki dealing with her trauma and grief in her own way, while a bad-with-people and emotions guy like soda struggles along as well, and they fit together somehow and help one another along. and i do really like, again, how their relationship here is strictly platonic. even when soda says something like, he does like her better than the other girls, it isn’t in a romantic way. he’s stating a fact; that he likes her more, as they’re basically besties at this point.
the slightly disjointed, almost—hesitant?—writing style here is great and works really well with soda’s character. the background komahina is appreciated, as well. i dunno how serious this fic was supposed to be, or if it was just supposed to be an exercise in writing of sorts, but i just. i enjoyed it. maybe it’s because i sympathize with a self-appointed loser like kazuichi, who feels a bit different from the rest of the world. not in a dramatic manner, like komaeda or izuru, but in a way that makes life just a bit more awkward to shoulder on through.
