Summary
Gasping for air as if I had fallen from a great height, I jolt upright only to be immediately assaulted by a blinding wave of pain that threatens to cleave my head in two. Clutching my forehead with a hiss, I close my eyes and try to steady my breathing as the incessant throbbing in my skull overrides all conscious thought. Dimly, I become aware of the sensation of rain falling steadily against my bare skin. The feeling of it is almost soothing and I latch onto it, bringing myself to awareness as the pain in my head lessens to a dull ache. Blinking my eyes open to take in my surroundings, I immediately freeze as I find myself in the middle of a dense forest. Several things hit me at once, beyond the obvious ‘where am I?’
I’m supposed to be dead.
