Summary
Rahne realises, a little too late, that her hands have gone all long and clawed and furry, and that her sharp nails are digging into Dani’s palms. The buzzing in her ears grows. She nearly recoils- but Dani clenches her hands tighter and looks her dead in the eyes. “I- Rahne, I’m fine, you don’t need to get the Professor, just- it’s- the bond, Rahne, just listen.”
Rahne listens. She can hear something unexpected. Something… uncomfortable. Something that really, really shouldn’t be possible.
“Dani.” She says. “Dani, why can I hear two of you?”
(OR: Rahne and Dani- from fifteen years in the future- get thrown back in time to the heyday of Charles Xavier's Institute for Gifted Children. Between ominous warnings, powers going on the fritz, and increasingly poor interpersonal relations, things are looking south for the New Mutants. And, as Illyana becomes increasingly ensnared in the ramifications her own past and the threat of her future, it's going to take all hands to save her. Even if they don't want to.

Occtis tenses. Ahead of him, Vaelus walks ahead without the purpose that has usually defined her. She’s stumbling, and damaged, and her eyes are so, so far away. She turns back to him, and he can see the sweat coating her brow. It’s too much, too vulnerable; he waves his hand and the green-white ball of light extinguishes itself, leaving them in monochrome, protective darkness. Vaelus’ voice drifts through the trees, lilting and gentle and unfamiliar. “Are you coming?”
Occtis picks up the pace to walk next to her. If she collapses, he needs to be close enough to catch her. It’s the only thing he can do.
(OR: On the road back from Tannesar, Occtis and Vaelus are separated from the rest of the group by a bandit attack.
Poison would be easier to handle if you were anyone but Occtis Tachonis, who has always been better with the dead than the living. But undeath doesn't care about ease.
And unless he wants Vaelus to join him beyond the grave, he's going to have to get help. And fast.)

“I’m getting out the invitations early.” Steph says. She laughs. “Next February. You just missed it.”
Cass will be dead by then, by Lady Shiva’s hand. She nods. “I think I’d like that.”

"You're bleeding," Teor says, half an hour later as they wait for Thjazi and the rear guard to arrive. "Your ear. It is not good."
"Oh." Kattigan hadn't noticed. Everything hurts, either from an old wound or a new one. "Mm. S' fine. Don't worry about it. I've survived worse."
Teor makes a disagreeing noise. At the time, Kattigan finds it strangely similar to an earthquake's rumble. Later on, he'll learn that it's the sound that heralds a stupid oath, or a horribly selfless act of heroism - a low, steady purr that means no, I am worried about it. I am worried about you.
