Summary
The egg shudders. The oddest fry that Philza has seen in his life bursts through. Easily ten times bigger than any that hatched in his pod, it doesn't have any scales, and is missing an entire set of fins. Those that it does have are sharp and hard, nothing like Philza's own.
But none of that matters the moment that he looks in the hatchling’s eyes. For the first time in forever there is something else in his heart but a gaping hole. It's like he wakes up from an unending nightmare and sees in aching clarity what he has known since he found the egg abandoned to the ocean’s mercy, much like he was.
This is his fry. His son.
