    "I'm, uh, I'm a little drunk," he says abruptly. Diavolo makes a noise into the phone. "In case you remember why you called. If it's important. I'm a little drunk." Did that make sense? Words are a little hard right now.

    "Hmm," Diavolo says, "Hmmm. That's fine. It's New Year's."

    "It's New Year's," Doppio agrees. "We're, y'know." He switches to English: "'Partying like it's 1999.'"

    "I don't speak French," Diavolo says, and Doppio chokes immediately.
