Izuku stares out the window, the red of the rising sun bathing the world around him in the same colour that runs through his veins. The same colour that drips down his frame from deep gashes. Familiar footsteps echo through the silent halls, bouncing around the tall stone ceilings and marble floors. They stop in the doorway. His eyes pass over to the man, frost covered skin also painted in the new born light. For a moment, Izuku can almost pretend they are the same. Red as dawn. But as Todoroki moves, his skin shimmers, betraying the metallic blood running just below its surface and dispelling any doubt of who he is.
“Izuku?” he says, voice unsteady with his heavy breathing. “Is it over?”

The door creaks open. A smile easily finds its way to his face as an orange cat jumps into his lap, meowing loudly. Izuku moves his long forgotten book aside, giving the little menace full access to commandeer his lap. Satisfied, the tabby plops down, purring loudly. A soft laugh floats in from the doorway.
“You’re a pushover,” Todoroki says, making his way into the room with two cups of hot chocolate in hand. His movements are elegant, the result of years of training for ballet. “And we wonder why he’s so demanding.”

His feet feel as if they are moving in sand draining through an hourglass whenever he tries to take a step. Reaching out, he tries to grab hold of the hand outstretched to him in turn, but he is mere millimeters yet worlds away. Their fingertips almost brush. A cry rips from Merlin’s lips. He slips through the sand.
Arthur’s corpse remains, crimson flowers blooming a field of blood around him.
