It was certainly unexpected. Nobody planned for this. He hated to admit it, but even Bruce himself hadn’t.
It was the first time in a long time Bruce was alone in Gotham. Even Alfred was away. He was on a trip back to England to “tie up some loose ends”. Bruce didn’t ask what that meant. He didn’t think he wanted to know.
Dick was in Bludhaven. Barbara was spending time with her father. Jason was off-world, Cass and Steph were in Hong Kong. Tim, a no-contact mission with his team. Even Damian was away, in Kansas with the Kents.
And Bruce was fucked because currently he was tied up in a van, caught utterly and completely unaware.

Dick plays with the stack of the paper cups on the side table, taking some out of the bottom rows and balancing them on top, until the pyramid wobbles and tips, paper cups tumbling to the floor. Dick’s hand freezes.
“It’s just—” he says after a while, his voice barely audible. “You were right down at the bottom and the limbs were bent all wrong and you weren’t moving.”

It had been a long time since the bat signal called Jason. A long time since that particular beacon had anything to do with him. He stuck to his streets. Dealt with Black Mask and Penguin and Two-Face when it suited him.
Jason perched on rooftops and fire escapes and kept his eyes on the ground. He listened to police scanners and hacked into the Bats' comms.
He didn't look up.
He remembered it, though. The rush of adrenaline when he'd spot the bat illuminated in the sky. As Robin, it meant an adventure was to be had. It meant purpose. Magic.

He stood, in the dim light of the kitchen, holding the countertop as he breathed. How could this happen again? Was it the curse of the Wayne’s, to be gunned down on the streets of the city they gave their hearts to, right in front of their children?
