If there was another constant in his life besides his quirk and his goal to be number one, it's that he's definitely not gonna be the best with what he thought was amazing explosions. That constant only became a thing fairly recently but if he were to be honest with himself, it's probably been around since he was six.
Around the same time he was pushed away from Izuku who's now the one person holding the pieces of him up as he's breaking down.
If he weren't in the dorms but back at home, there's no doubt he'd mother would slap - let's say, scold - him.

Izuku stares at her. And then he fucking laughs. The sudden sound making Recovery Girl wince.
“Good one,” he manages finally, wiping at his face. “Wow. For a second there I thought you were about to tell me I was dying.” He inhales, still smiling.
“But no, seriously, what’s wrong with me?”
Recovery Girl doesn’t smile.

Izuku’s smile disappears.
