Echo swallows hard. He sees the way she grits her teeth, how she strains against his grip. Her words are unsteady, and her voice cracks when she whispers, “Why didn’t you just let them kill me?”
Yue opens his mouth, only to close it again. It throws him off a little just how familiar that question is. He’s asked himself that a lot of times, more than he can count. It is odd, hearing it from another person, and it makes something heavy settle in the pit of his stomach.
In the end, he says, “You didn’t live this far just to die.”
Alternatively; the gods live, and Echo breaks out anyway.

Sometimes he feels bad making Hua Cheng worry about him so much, making him go so far for something as simple as getting him to eat more than just a small snack or two. But whenever he voices any of these thoughts, Hua Cheng only ever seems to shake his head, telling him gently that there is nothing to feel bad for. And it is hard to continue feeling so terribly whenever faced with the warmth of Hua Cheng's patience.
A reminder that he is, if nothing else, someone who is loved.
