“We’re casting the play. Will you take the part?”
Langa snapped out of his reverie to see the class rep speaking to him from the front of the room. He’d zoned out before the class even decided to perform a play, and he had no idea what role they were trying to assign him. Maybe the prince, based on that embarrassing nickname? He wasn’t excited about the prospect, but he wanted to help, and he was the type to decide first and ask questions later.
“Sure,” he said. “But, uh, which part?”
A murmur of excitement rippled through the class, accompanied by a few stray giggles. The class rep smirked at him.
“No take-backs if you weren’t paying attention, Hasegawa-kun. You’ll be playing Snow White.”
“Oh,” said Langa. He shrugged. “Okay.”

The girl’s smile faded. “I’m not a little kid, I’m ten. And my Daddy made the board for me.”
“Liar!” he retorted. “That’s not something some guy just made. It’s an Infinity. That’s the brand most of the national team uses.”
“Well, yeah. My Dad rode one when he skated in the Olympics, and then after he medaled the first time everyone wanted one.”
Kenji snorted incredulously. “Don’t be ridiculous! You want me to believe your dad makes pro-caliber boards and skates for Japan?”
“No,” said the girl slowly. “Daddy wasn’t on the national team.... Dad was.”

The girl’s smile faded. “I’m not a little kid, I’m ten. And my Daddy made the board for me.”
