I could hear you talkin’ to me, and I knew I’d be okay, I just had to wake up.” He gave Johnny a soft smile usually only reserved for Soda. “I’m glad you were here.” He patted Johnny’s knee. “I don’t know what I’d do without you, Johnnycakes.”

Still, like always, he ignores the piece of him that insists on doing the right thing. Absently, Paul wonders how many times a thing like that can be ignored before it withers and dies.
Paul keeps his eyes on the road as Pony thinks the question over. It’s a moment before he answers, silence filled by the radio he’d forgotten he left on. News. Not local. He’d wanted to hear about someplace else. Someone else’s problems.
