Lottie turns to face her, lifting her gaze hesitantly. But this time, the look in her eyes is unmistakable; even drunk, Shauna recognizes it.
She looks nervous.
Lottie, whom Shauna has never seen look unsure about anything, who is flawlessly confident on the field, who rules her social circle, who gets perfect grades, is looking at her nervously. Shauna’s stomach flips a little, but it’s easier to assume it’s just the liquor sitting poorly in her stomach.

Shauna hates her life, but won’t make a change. She's closed off, isolated, and waiting for some kind of divine intervention or sign from above (or below).
Intervention comes in the form of literal signs shoved into her mailbox, taped to her door, and placed neatly under the windshield wipers of her minivan.
Basically:
Shauna thinks she’s being followed and harassed by a cult and ends up infatuated and a little flattered by the attention of the organization's leader.
