Candace’s phone screen goes black as Stacy hangs up. She sighs. “Well, I guess it’s just you and me, Perry.”

Pearl nods, eager, and glances hopefully at Trucy. Trucy looks back, her blue eyes flickering with something strange. Pearl's smile slips as Trucy reaches for Uncle Nick’s hand, fingers tangling with his.
“...I wanna sleep with you,” Trucy says quietly. The balloon of excitement shrinks in Pearl’s chest, painful with disappointment. Uncle Nick looks surprised, a glimmer of worry on his face, before nudging her gently.
“You don’t wanna sleepover with Pearl?” he says, encouraging. “It’ll be fun, and she doesn’t snore like I do.”
Trucy shakes her head, unhappy. And then she looks up, eyes glimmering, and says, “Please...Daddy?”
Uncle Nick’s eyes go wide, wide, so wide they shine.
And something in Pearl’s chest, small and quiet, goes so tight it hurts.
