    Maglor sat on the stone bench, utterly still, his hands in his lap, his eyes fixed on something very far from the garden.
    "Maglor."
    Nothing. The ferns continued their business. A bird in the upper branches expressed a brief opinion.
    "Maglor."
    Elrond hardly ever raised his voice without cause, and he raised it now — not much, but with a particular quality in it, the note that costs something to use, that means I am here, come back. Maglor startled like a man surfacing from deep water, blinking, locating himself by degrees: the oak, the bench, the moss, the tray, Elrond.
    "Forgive me," he said, and his voice was rough from disuse. "You have been trying to reach me for some time."
    "A minute. Perhaps two." Elrond set the tray on the bench with the careful economy of long practice making difficult things seem ordinary. He poured without asking. "I hope you will forgive the interruption. It is rather chilly in the shade, and it seemed to me you might be persuaded to share a cup of tea."
