'It's a good job we did the full barrage of tests,' the doctor said with a gentle smile. 'Congratulations; you're pregnant.'
And in spite of it all, despite the unexpected ridiculousness of the statement, despite how ill she felt, despite the burble of laughter that threatened in her throat, Rumi's media training switched straight on, and she gave a bland smile.
'That's not possible. It must be a false positive.'
But the doctor's smile was patient in turn. 'I might have agreed with you, but for the fact that we ran two types of test. Twice each. One false positive is easily possible. Four false positives…the chances are astronomically low.'
The doctor paused and turned around her computer monitor so Rumi could look. And Rumi did look, leaning in even as the static roar began in her ears. And there it was, four listings of a single word: POSITIVE.
'Congratulations,' the doctor said again, as Rumi began to fully appreciate how her battered laptop felt when it bluescreened.

And the fevers and chills and aches she’s having are just side effects of the rabies vaccinations the ER doctors gave her because she couldn't tell them the animal was a demon. And those side effects continue for a month because she’s having a bad reaction to the subsequent vaccine doses, which sucks but she’ll be fine. It’s all going to be fine. Right?
