Summary
Lance graudated at the top of his class from The Garrison almost three years ago. He was selected to head out on the Kerberos mission with the rest of the crew not long after, going through the preparation and heading out. Now he, and the rest of the crew, have been missing for over two years. Declared dead, and now suddenly he's crashed back on Earth rambling about needing to find a weapon.
Or: Lance is older than Keith by two years and left with Shiro. Suddenly appearing two years later, unaware of how much time has passed and seems to ignore the connection they were growing in search of a weapon he needs to protect from the Galra.

“I understand… because I’m the same.” His voice came as a whisper, and Lance barely managed to pick up on the words. He wasn’t sure if he heard right, but chokes on a laugh as he shakes his head. The same? He didn’t have the same marks. He wasn’t going through the same crisis that Lance was going through now. “I know what you’re thinking. I’m not… Altean. But I’m not completely human either.” Keith’s body language seems to stiffen as he says this, crossing his arms as he looks over at Lance. His gaze was much softer than when they first saw each other the evening before.

Summary
Keith gets a blessed 30 seconds where the only sound is his sword slashing through shrubbery before Lance decides to start up again. "You know what I don't understand?" He asks, his words drenched in incredulity.
"The desire for peace and quiet." Keith vaults over what he assumes is the equivalent of a fallen tree on this planet.
Lance ignores his response. "Why you came back so small and fragile and weak."
"Clearly, because I'm not whoever you think I am."
Or: Altean Lance holds a grudge against Human Keith for what he did in another lifetime as a Galran. Every time they enter their lions together, the lions replay old memories. Keith finds out more and more who Lance was to him and what exactly Keith did to make Lance hate him.

Summary
Keith has always lived his life by a few simple rules that boil down to one ultimatum: never let the fey know he’s an ironblood. Summary
Lance gave up the chance to make a difference by giving up the Red Lion. He gave up his chance to be a hero. What he wants now is just to go home. He'll protect Earth and his family from the Galra as best he can when he gets there. That's his top priority now.
And sure, he stole the opportunity to make this decision from Keith, and maybe that's not fair.
But whatever. If Keith was going to make the wrong choice, Lance wasn't going to give him one.
