Because every day he wakes up and it’s the first thing he hears, the only thing he hears besides his ragged breaths, until Ivan holds him in his arms and whispers reassurances to him until he eventually calms down.
Every step makes him sink deeper into his bad thoughts until he can’t breathe again and he breaks down, again. Over and over, until the rain stops and the desert is back to its dry, hot, normal state."

Did he ever really feel happy?
I think so.
I think he felt happy when we'd sit under that tree together and draw. When things were finally quiet and no one was looking at him. He'd stop smiling and the look in his eyes would go from determination to something more akin to curiosity. He'd touch my hand and I would mess something up. I'd nag at him but he'd just stare at me with that same expression. Like he was just trying to understand.
I think Ivan spent his entire life trying to learn how to be human. So much so that he never really had time to figure it out.

Please tell me you understand what I'm saying here, he pleads internally. Please notice how I'm trying to tell you that I like having you around.
A beat. To say that Ivan is stunned would be an understatement.
“And, also—so what if I’m lactose?” Till adds. Incredulously. Perhaps mildly offended.
Beachside escapades in Ivan's car, but Till's driving (somehow, he's always the one driving). Thank the heavens they're parked when Ivan asks Till for an impossible favor.
Though, at this point, Till should be used to having to make the impossible possible for Ivan.
Key word being should.

Summary
A cough.
Till's gaze snaps up at the sound, caught between disbelief and the cruelty of a maybe. He waits, dares not even to breathe, terrified that even a single sound would shatter the illusion.
Another cough, so soft that Till would not have believed he heard it if he had not also noticed Ivan's shoulder jerk. For a single moment, he stays frozen in place as if in a trance. Then, the fog lifts.
"Ivan?"
