Summary
"Kris feels tears start to stream down their checks again. They adjust their head so the tears are hidden by their arm. They pretend they are asleep. They wish that they actually were. The kind that they wouldn’t wake up from. They can still hear Susie and Noelle talking. They still feel sick. They are mad at Noelle. They don't want to be. They think about doing cruel things to Noelle.
They don't want to be thinking about this. They don't. They swear that they don't. They try their hardest to not think about these Weird awful things. They bite their lip so hard that they taste blood. Metallic and salty. They can still hear Susie and Noelle talking. They need to think about something else. Anything else."
...
Kris is getting worse. They don't know how to ask for help, and they feel like they are watching their only real friendship slip away from them. They are not dealing with it well.

Summary
Susie was eleven when she first fought her mother.
Their fights ended with both of them broken, beaten, and occasionally in handcuffs. That was always when they would move — to run from the cops. Her mother would find some sad sap to post bail for her, then skip town altogether.
Susie tried to stay behind, sometimes.
“You ruined my life,” her mother would say. “You’re not getting your own ’til you fix it.”
“Good news, hag,” she mumbles in the restroom of the Librarby, “might’ve ruined mine, too.”

Summary
It's not a surprise that as the only daughter of a wealthy merchant family, Toph Beifong would someday be offered up on the altar of matrimony. For more wealth, for a noble title, for the good of the family. She'd just planned to run away first. And she definitely didn't expect this mess.
