Os dois passavam o tempo brigando e conversando e alternando entre assuntos sérios e mesmo que existisse aquela porta fechada de Coisas Que Não se Discutem entre eles, aqueles assuntos que faziam Luciano sorrir um pouco demais e mudar de assunto ou fazer alguma coisa irritante para distraí-lo, mesmo que isso existisse, era bom, o resto todo era bom.
Ou: depois de décadas de desconfiança, os meninos tem uma conversa decente. Com espadas.

Lots of families did that, and sometimes some of them hired a kid to help the parent who already worked for them, or because they were alone in the world and needed a place, and paid for their education while they worked, and so on. It had never crossed his mind that his family would do it too. Or that the hired kid would get stuck with him.

“Damianos.”
Damen looked up. Laurent’s gaze was level, and very blue.
“Broadly,” Laurent said, “is it the pain? Or the being told what to do?”
And suddenly Damen was finding it very hard to breathe. Laurent simply waited him out, his gaze fixed on Damen’s face. Damen couldn’t help remembering Nik’s description from last weekend. High alert.
“Both,” he said finally. Laurent gave a short nod, like he was filing that away. “And…”
“And what?”
Damen licked his lips. “And you, I think.”
This time the wash of pink over Laurent’s cheeks was unmistakable. Damen reveled in it, even as he fought the urge to squirm at his own confession.
“Noted,” Laurent said, very evenly.
