Shane walks over and sits on Ilya’s lap, welcomed by Ilya’s outstretched arms. Conversation continues around them, but all Shane can do is focus on Ilya.
“Are you having fun?”
Ilya looks up, starry-eyed, at Shane. “Yes, Solynshko,” he smiles. “But I did not like that you left for so long. You know that I cannot survive without you for more than five minutes.”
“God, you are so dramatic.” He flicks Ilya’s shoulder. “Also, we were on and off fuck buddies for almost a decade, who only saw each other a few times a season.”
“Ugh, do not remind me,” Ilya groans. “Worst decade of my life.”
Usually, a comment like that wouldn’t get under Shane’s skin. But after what Svetlana told him, he couldn’t help but feel uneasy.
Worst decade. Was it the worst decade?
OR
Svetlena tells Shane about Ilya's life in Russia. Shane doesn't know how to handle this... and it sends him spiralling. He needed to fix it. He needs to be better. He'll do anything to make it better.

“Of course I do. And I love you too. I’ll see you…” Shane had to consider when the next day they could visit would be.
"When you see me," Ilya supplied.
“I'll see you when I see you. Okay. Sure.”
“Bye, Shane."
“Bye.”
The Boxing Day argument doesn't happen, Ilya doesn't seek professional help, and he and Shane keep pretending everything's fine. In the last few weeks of the season, Ilya reaches a breaking point. After saving his boyfriend's life, Shane is forced to grapple with the broken pieces, figure out what went wrong, and try to slot everything back together again.

Protectiveness rears its ugly head. Severely, Ilya declares, “This is none of your fucking concern.”
“He’s asking for you.”
