I suddenly regret teaching him literally anything about biology. Some things more than others.
“Figure of speech,” I say. That’s so not the point. “Listen, is this about the other day? Because we can pretend it never happened, if it’s making you uncomfortable.”
Rocky skids to a stop. He slowly backs up a few paces, and now I can tell he is actually focusing on me, even though it doesn’t really matter which facet of his body is pointed in my direction, due to the aforementioned radial symmetry.
“Not uncomfortable,” Rocky says. “Interesting display of human culture and biology. Grace very kind to share with me."

When she lays back down, she lays down to face him. In the dark, she can’t make out his face, but she knows he’s looking at her. Her right hand lies in the space between them, palm up on the sheets. Partially, it’s there because she’s comfortable laying with her hand there. Partially, it’s there as a dare, or maybe a prayer: Close the distance. We can have this. Just this little thing. Nobody could begrudge us this little thing.
She can still feel him looking at her when he shifts, slowly bringing his arm out from beneath the duvet. She looks back. She doesn’t breathe.
His fingers brush her palm, then entwine with hers.
The shapeless thing between them settles, sighs. Her nerves are electrified, sleep should be impossible, yet she drifts off within minutes, still holding Daniel’s hand.
