The harrowing, sinking feeling in his chest nearly chokes Daniel as it comes up. Even with his memories clipped and sutured together, he knows it to be untrue even as he asks, “And I ran?”
“Oh, Daniel.” He thinks he understands now, why Daniel had looked at him the way he did when Louis walked away from him that last time, smug and conceited, like he was the emperor of the world simply by virtue of having torn through all the wear and tear on Armand’s safety blanket. He could tear into this memory with his teeth, let the blood of its corpse seep into his mouth, and it still wouldn’t be enough to make up for bearing the burden of being the only one who remembers. “You didn’t.
