He kept his daemon locked in a safe so nobody could use her against him.
He was a demon, a ghost, a malevolent spirit, something out of a children’s story. Something other and soulless, to be avoided and feared from a distance.
Inej didn’t believe those stories.

Inej Ghafa escaped the slavers who kidnapped her and fought her way up through the Ketterdam gangs to become the Wraith, the feared leader of the Dregs. Kaz Brekker was not so lucky and has been the Kerch crow at Tante Heleen's Menagerie for the last five years. When a spot of pickpocketing leads to a chance meeting, Inej realizes she could have found the crew member she's needed all along. She just needs to get Kaz out of his indenture and Tante Heleen won't let him go without a fight. To make matters even tougher, Kaz won't leave behind the other Kerch crow at the Menagerie - Wylan Van Eck.
I was inspired by both 'Fool Me Twice' by Corantien and 'We are not mountains' by flourescent_adolescent both of which are AU - Character Swaps of Inej and Kaz and are so damn good. Got me thinking there's not enough of these on here, so I wrote my own.
FYI - Inej still defies the laws of physics and gravity and Kaz still has the limp. Kaz has a slight touch aversion but Tante Heleen has almost successfully beaten it out of him now and it's more to do with just not having a choice in who touches him. Also I really wanted to add more Wylan whump to my other SOC fic and there just wasn't the space, but there is now!

The boys are all mid-career faculty (except D'Artagnan who's a post-doc) in a slightly dysfunctional Geosciences department at an unnamed university somewhere in the Mid South. Everything is going well for the newly intimate Athos and Aramis until the latter disappears while engaged in his summer field season in Guatemala. Major angst and a serious dose of hurt/comfort follow when he's finally recovered.

Having attacked the Grand Palace in Os Alta and toppled the fragile reign of the Lantsov family, the Darkling has taken his place as new leader of the Ravkan people. After prophetic dreams about a certain merchant city and its crow pique his interest, he takes his Grisha to discover what fate points him towards.
As he clashes with Kaz Brekker, Kaz’ hidden Grisha power is exposed and he is promptly kidnapped by the Darkling in an attempt to foster the boy’s ability in Ravka’s favor.The rest of the crows goes in pursuit while Kaz needs to reassess his priorities in life as well as who he really is during his time in the Little Palace, and the Darkling whose pull keeps drawing him closer than he would like it.

This story is going to offer an alternative take on main trilogy story in which neither Mal nor Alina will be present. I hope you can still, or because it, enjoy it :).
