A cluster of young men, a few years older than Charles was when he died were milling about. He knew their names and their faces, though he’d never spoken a word to any of them. He knew Petey had just broken up with his long-term girlfriend after he realized he’d only stayed with her due to familial pressure. They’d had a fight over his upcoming trip to Spain. He knew that William would soon be off to school in Wales and wasn’t looking forward to it.
But his favourite people to watch and haunt were a pair of mates - childhood friends named Arjun and Jack. The pair had such tremendous ease with one another, and easy banter. They sometimes butted heads - and Charles had been witness to some pretty dramatic fights over the years - but they always came back together. He was pleased to see they were there that night. The pair were drinking and relaxed, and had just started a game of darts.
