Summary
CC-2224 is one of the last of the clones in the ranks of the stormtroopers. CC-2224 thinks he used to have a name that had no numbers, but thinking is prohibited.
He cleans his armour two days later, when the rebels have been squashed into the desert sand like so many beetles, as best he can. The two orange stripes of mud have smudged and seared across his bucket, almost invisible against the blood flecks and gritty sand and soot marring the white surface. But they’re still there. CC-2224 can see them. He runs his fingers gently down and thinks he remembers — paint, gold and orange, meticulous hours spent — but remembering is — and he blinks and it isn’t a wet cloth he has laid out on his small workspace, but brushes and tubes of — but remembering is prohibited.
