    “I think so,” Jaskier says, “Geralt of Rivia, aren’t you?”

    The witcher does look surprised at that, his pale, thin mouth in a straight line.

    Geralt of Rivia is famous for being… more of a so-called abomination than any other witcher, or so people whisper. All of the others only went through the infamous Trial of Grasses and were revived once and then sent on their way, but him —

    People say that he took so well to the mutagens that they tried to enhance him further. Jaskier doesn’t know how much truth there is to the tales – if he was killed and revived more than once and if the alchemists of his school actually sew new limbs on him to make him better at his intended purpose -- but he knows that the man is given a wide berth by anyone who doesn’t need his services, barely gets paid and speaks little and is infamous for something that went down in Blaviken years ago.

    “What if I am?” the witcher asks.

     

    Or: in which everything is more or less the same except that all witchers die and get revived during the trials, Jaskier absolutely can't care less for that one notion and Geralt doesn't quite know what to make of that.

    Stiles purchases three werewolves for the house.

    Derek is large and looks glowery so the only people who want him want to break him—but Stiles notes in the auction that Derek's obedience is too quick to be anything but voluntary. So Stiles purchases him and is pleased to note that he's very well behaved for all his outward projection is that of violence too strong for repression drugs to tame. He's even sweet really, and he makes these tiny, fragile sounds like genuine want when Stiles takes him, mouth already wet and ready when the Sheriff comes home to see their new pet.

    At twenty-five, Shane works from home in cyber security. He gets all his groceries delivered. He avoids the outside world whenever possible. Finally—finally—he caves to his parents’ insistence that it’s time to purchase an omega.

    Ilya is supposed to be difficult. That’s what the auction house warned him, anyway. They aren’t wrong. Between the language barrier, the violent mood swings, incessant noise, and feral behaviors, Ilya is nothing like the obedient omegas Shane is raised to expect. Half the time, Shane can’t tell if the man hates him, fears him, or is losing his damn mind. Probably all of them, all the time. The other half of the time, Ilya watches him like he’s waiting for Shane to spring a trap. News flash: there isn’t one.

    Shane doesn't have any inkling of what he’s doing. He’s never shared space with another human being before. Let alone an omega who doesn't understand personal space. As the walls crack between them, Shane notices things he never questioned before. He realizes there is something deeply troubling in the world he grew up in.
