A hush fell over the room, so utterly complete that Stratt’s pounding heartbeat felt deafening. She inhaled deeply. Exhaled.
This was it. Everything she had worked towards had culminated into this one, singular moment. She felt nauseous with anticipation for it.

It didn’t look dangerous.
It sat on a high shelf in Lady Anne Darcy’s sitting room at Pemberley, wedged between a pristine Peerage of England and a velvet Book of Common Prayer.
The book itself was plain. Scuffed calfskin, soft corners, a blank spine. It looked like the kind of diary meant for watercolor roses and polite thoughts on the weather and the Derbyshire lambing season.
It was not.
Crack the spine, and the illusion vanished. There were no watercolors — just tight, slashing black ink. The pages laid bare the ugly reality of high society: earldoms propped up by blackmail, rivals squeezed out of fortunes, and fools steered into marriages of convenience. It was a ledger of manipulation, written by a woman who felt herself above the society around her.
