Fuck, his arm ached. His head, behind his eyes, his nose. The smell of the burning was horrible. His clothes stuck to his body, still damp from the burst pipe.
He carried Will, hand tight around his waist and forearm, holding him upright as the blood that smeared under his nose dried. They weaved around the bodies, cracks in the asphalt and overturned trucks. Flames still continued to light the area, but the almost angry flickering of the lights has died down. -

“Coran, what’s happening?” Lance didn’t like how Shiro's voice shook. Was something wrong with the wormhole?
“The integrity of the wormhole has been compromised,” Coran yelled. “We’re breaking down!”
Lance sucked in a breath, eyes wide. Compromised? Breaking down? “What does that mean?!” He asked into the comms.
“It means we have no control where we’re headed!”

"What?" Keith stammered. "Lance, no—"
“Times change, Keith,” he interjected. “I wasn’t going to be a pilot forever. I was always coming back home. I’m happy here.”
Keith’s mouth slammed shut. He didn’t say anything, didn’t have to. His eyes said everything. They softened in disbelief and something softer, as they meticulously traced every line and shadow on Lance's face, over and over and over again, just to find the unvarnished truth beneath the careful lie of his features. His lips settled into a firm line, because he wasn’t convinced, not one bit. He knew Lance, and this… this wasn’t him.
Not even close.

Keith is invited to the McClain household for a visit, expecting a few weeks of peace. What he doesn't know is that Lance is a mess, hung up on a past he can't shake.
