The question makes Shane’s brain short circuit.
Shane swallows. “I mean—yeah.”
“Then why haven’t you?”
“I don’t know.” Shane shrugs again, shoulders tight. “Timing. People. It’s just… not something I think about like that.”
That’s not entirely true.
He does think about it. Just in a different way. Abstractly. Like something other people do, but not he himself.
Ilya watches him for a long moment.

Ilya was feeling like a rabid dog, frothing at the mouth, as he kept driving into Shane.“I hate you. I fucking hate you” - Rozanov gritted out, biting down hard on the plump muscles of Shane’s shoulder. He wanted blood to wet and stain his teeth.
Ilya felt like he would either throw up or start crying, everything coming up to his throat.
«Господи… за что мне это… Шейн, зачем ты ко мне пришел?» /God, what did I do to deserve this? Shane, why did you come to me?/

This is beautifully captured. Shane is a safe space for Ilya’s ugliness and pain and violence. Ilya trusts Shane can take everything he needs to give. A lot to revisit and unpack here. I’m going to be thinking about this for a while.

Summary
After Shane's plan to come out to Ilya in Tampa falls through, the pair have a falling out. There is no cottage. Instead, Ilya is forced to wait and see Shane at a charity event being held in New York. Ilya hopes that, after a miserable summer apart, he and Shane can reconcile.
There's just one problem.
Jordan Bragg, a forward for the New York Admirals, has also come out as gay. Stunningly handsome, funny, and just what a heartbroken Hollander needs, Jordan makes it clear that Ilya Rozanov isn't the only one after the Metro's star centre.

Summary
Ilya is not going to steal Shane Hollander's dog. That would be illegal. And wrong. And someone would probably find out and make Ilya give him back.
So. Not stealing.
But there is nothing wrong with giving Chernysh all the pats and treats that he deserves, is there?
Nothing wrong with encouraging Chernysh to spend more and more time at Ilya's house until he doesn't even remember who Hollander is.
Because Hollander is stupid and boring and does not deserve a dog as good as Chernysh. No, he doesn't, does he? Because Chernysh is the best boy in the whole world, yes he is.
